Milan is gearing up to
host the 2015 Universal Exposition,
from 1 May until 31 October.
The theme of
Expo Milano
2015
is “Feeding the Planet,
Energy for Life” and more than
140 countries and international
organisations will participate.
Discussions relating to the
sustainable development of the
world’s food industry will be held
throughout the Expo. Exhibitions
relating to the future of the food
chain and the relationship be-
tween art and food are among
those planned during the six
month event.
The Expo site, which covers
in excess of 1.1 million square
metres, will be open each day
between 10am and 11pm. A total
of 20 million visitors are antici-
pated. Eight million of those are
expected to come from non-EU
nations.
“We will be hosting around
250,000 visitors a day, that’s the
maximum capacity…the equiva-
lent of the size of the eighth
largest city in Italy, Messina on
Sicily. That will be compounded
by the fact the inhabitants of
our city will be changing every
single day,” says Piero Galli, the
General Manager of the Event
Management Division of the
Expo 2015 Company, looking for-
ward to the logistical and organ-
isational challenges ahead.
The Expo site is located
approximately 30 minutes
north-west of the city center
and features pavilions designed
by starchitects including Sir
Norman Foster. 53 countries
will construct national pavilions
along the two main axes of the
site. Other nations will showcase
their cultures, traditions and cu-
linary history in villages themed
around food products and re-
gions of the world.
Participants from number of
the world’s leading universities
will collaborate in
Laboratorio
Expo
, a project to share research
and ideas relating to food produc-
tion. Plans also exist for a network
of female participants to discuss
nutrition under the
Women for
Expo
umbrella.
A nightly show,
Allavita!
, will
be performed from 6 May to 23
August in an on-site, open air the-
ater. Italian performers have been
recruited to perform in the show,
which was created for the Expo by
Canada’s Cirque Du Soleil.
This will be the second time
that Milan has hosted an Expo.
The first was in 1906, celebrat-
ing the opening of the Simplon
Tunnel.
Adult tickets for entry to Expo
Milano 2015 cost up to €32 if pur-
chased before the Expo begins or a
maximum of €39 when bought on
or after 1 May.
