Perfect natural resources,
healing thermal and air spas, im-
proving infrastructure, professional
medical staff, all at an affordable
price, combine to make Serbia very
desirable to health tourists. Still,
that potential is underexploited
and there is almost no informa-
tion available abroad about, for
instance, the quality of dental work
or plastic surgery conducted in
Serbia.
Spa tourism is the most
developed branch of tourism and
has been a pillar of health tourism
for over a century. Time seems to
have stood still at Serbia’s amazing
spas. Still under state ownership,
the country’s spas only began to
be privatised this year. As such,
developing Serbia’s health tour-
ism is mainly a private initiative
carried out by a few established
individuals.
Dr Jasmina Knežević, director
and owner of Bel Medic hospital, the
most renowned private health facil-
ity in Serbia, considers the country a
hidden gem for this type of tourism.
Her hospital has treated over 600
patients who travelled from abroad
just to receive medical services.
- Serbia has excellent medical
experts, on a par with their inter-
national colleagues – claims Dr
Knežević. – This is why we’ve seen
a dramatic increase in doctors and
nurses leaving for other countries,
because their knowledge is in high
demand. We have the quality and
our services are cheaper compared
to international standards, while
the comfort level found at private
clinics is equal to the best hotels. A
large number of foreign investment
companies have started covering
the costs of private medical treat-
ment in Serbia, a precondition for
attracting “health tourists”. Prices
are generally up to 40% less than in
the European Union, while dental
work can be up to 60% cheaper.
Despite this, Serbia’s health
tourism is still in the development
