While in a taxi from the
airport, which was driven by
a nice, chatty lady, we ap-
proached the Hotel Regent
Porto Montenegro and the first
impression could be described
as déjà vu, but that is just an
architectural ruse of a build-
ing designed in the style of
Mediterranean construction
from the period of Austro-
Hungarian rule. Anyone who
has visited Trieste, for example,
or even nearby Dubrovnik,
would feel like they were in a
familiar place upon first seeing
the Regent. This is ingenious
architecture, and efficient.
That’s because the majority of
visitors are boat owners who
tour Mediterranean marinas,
and at the Regent they anchor
in a very central position of the
most ambitiously conceived
marina on the Adriatic coast, in
Tivat’s Porto Montenegro.
From the very first mo-
ment the hotel staff showed a
discrete and unobtrusive dose
of directness, which was very
pleasant and differed com-
pletely from kindly professional
services at a distance, which we
have grown accustomed to in
Western Europe.
The sense of immediacy,
it turned out, was not acciden-
tal. The Regent has brought
together some of the best per-
sonnel in the hotel sector who
were born in the Balkans – the
food and beverage director is a
Belgradian with many years of
experience in Cyprus, the deputy
head chef is from Croatian and
learned his trade at Denmark’s
Noma, the most prestigious
restaurant in the world... They
came fully to the fore under the
leadership of a dynamic Western
European management team led
by Austrian Michael Poch.
The hotel is very elegant
and is one of the most presti-
gious in the Balkan part of the
Adriatic coastline. In addition
to the designer elegance that
dominates the large hall and
the majority of the hotel space,
attention to detail can be
noticed at every step: you can
enjoy the scents of Mediter-
ranean rosemary, lavender and
thyme at every turn, with the
pots around the building filled
with them. On each floor there
are baskets arranged with fresh
lemons, as a reminder that you
are on the Mediterranean.
Standard rooms, of which
there are 51, are slightly smaller
than we would expect from a
hotel of the highest category,
but that is compensated for by
a beautiful terrace with a view
of the enchanting sunset over
the Bay of Kotor, a unique fjord
in the Adriatic Sea. The apart-
ments and residences, of which
there are 35, are more spacious,
with the largest residence
boasting four bedrooms on the
top, fifth floor. The details in the
rooms also signify the carefully
selected benefits for guests
who expect first-class quality -
elegant French cosmetics await
you in the bathroom.
Regent hotels and residenc-
es are small in terms of numbers
of hotels, but in terms of exclu-
sivity this is a renowned brand,
especially in Asia, where there
are the most Regents. In Europe
there are only two Regents, in
Berlin and in Tivat. The chain is
just planning its European ex-
pansion, which makes it unusual
that they would opt for Tivat
as one of the first points from
which to expand business, con-
sidering the many possibilities
offered by different countries.
- Regent is unrepeatable,
meaning we don’t like be-
ing where everybody is – said
Regent Hotels & Resorts CEO
Mark Lettenbichler recently. -
We consider it exciting to be in a
destination such as this, because
