PRIČA O
JANU NEPOMUKU
Jan Nepomuk je bio vikar u
vreme vladavine kralja Vaclava IV,
krajem 14. veka. Bio je ispovednik
mnogih u gradu, uključujući i kra-
ljevu suprugu, kraljicu Sofiju. Kralj
zavet. Ljutiti kralj je zapovedio da
Jana odvedu u tamnicu i stave ga
na muke.
Sveštenik je pokušao da se
nagodi: ako prestanu mučenja,
reći će šta je rekla kraljica, ali to
sme čuti samo jedan jedini živi
stvor u tamnici. Kralj je pristao, pod
pretpostavkom da Jan namerava
sve da kaže njemu. No, Nepomuk
je zatražio da svi prisutni napuste
prostoriju kako bi tajnu mogao
šapnuti kraljevom psu. Srditi kralj
je naredio da se mučenje nasta-
vi, sveštenik je izdahnuo i, pod
okriljem noći, bačen je s Karlovog
mosta u reku.
Jan Nepomuk je potajno postao
svetac zaštitnik Čeha, koji su ga
smatrali „mučenikom jezika (za
zubima)“, na osnovu legende o kra-
ljičinoj ispovedi. Praški nadbiskup je
1729. predvodio svečanost progla-
šenja Jana Nepomuka za sveca.

LEGEND
OF NEPOMUK
John of Nepomuk was a priest
during the reign of King Wenceslas
IV at the end of 14
th
century. He
heard the confessions of many of
the town’s people, including Wenc-
eslas’s wife, Queen Sofia. Wences-
las was very jealous and suspected
Sofia of straying from her marriage
vows. The king asked John what
the queen had revealed, but the
priest refused to tell, saying it was
confidential. The enraged king had
John hauled into a dungeon and
tortured.
The priest tried to strike a
bargain, insisting that if the tor-
ture came to an end he would tell
one soul present in the dungeon
what the queen had said. The king
agreed, assuming John intended
to tell him. But John asked that
everyone present leave the room
so he could whisper the secret to
the king’s dog. The enraged king
ordered the torture to continue. The
priest died and was thrown from
the Charles Bridge into the river
during the dead of night.
John became the underground
patron saint of Czechs, who re-
garded him as a ”martyr of the
tongue” after the legend of the
queen’s confession. In 1729 the
archbishop of Prague conducted his
sanctification.
