Few bridges match the romantic ambi-
ance of Prague’s picturesque Charles Bridge,
which spans the River Vltava between the
Malá Strana district, above which the city’s
vast castle rises, and
Staré Město,
Old Town.
Many bridges remain purely func-
tional – a means of travelling between two
points – yet the Charles Bridge has become a
popular attraction in its own right. On sunny
afternoons be prepared for a crowd of camera
wielding tourists ambling over the cobbles
of this structure, which was pedestrianized
in 1950. Hawkers sell souvenirs and artists
display works depicting the landmarks of
Prague, including, of course, the famous
bridge known to locals as
Karlův most.
Photographers will tell you that the best
time to see the bridge is just after dawn,
when the sun rises over the Gothic tower on
the Old Town side of the bridge, or early in
the evening, when the crowd has departed
and street lamps cast their warm glow on the
well-trodden cobbles. Even foggy mornings
have an evocative charm.
It wasn’t until 1870 that this 16-arch stone
structure officially became known as the
Charles Bridge, in honour of Bohemia’s King
Charles IV – also the Holy Roman Emperor –
the man who commissioned its construction
in 1357. It was completed in 1402 but, remark-
ably, remained Prague’s only bridge across
the Vltava until 1841.
Ask a local and they may well recount the
legend according to which Charles himself
alo je mostova koji odi-
šu tako romantičnom
atmosferom kao živopi-
sni praški Karlov most,
što se proteže preko Vltave i spaja Stari grad
Staré Město –
i Malu stranu, četvrt nad ko-
jom se uzdiže veliki praški zamak.
Mostovi su mahom projektovani s jedi-
nom svrhom da spoje dve tačke. Karlov most
Karlův most
.
Fotografi će vam reći da je najbolje vre-
me da obiđete most odmah nakon svanuća,
kada se sunce diže iznad gotičke kule sa
starogradske strane mosta, ili u ranim večer-
njim satima, kada se turisti raziđu i ulične
svetiljke raspu svoj topli sjaj na dobro uta-
banu kaldrmu. Čak i jutra u sumaglici imaju
poseban šarm.
Ova kamena građevina sa 16 lukova od
1870. godine zvanično nosi ime Karlov most,
u čast Karla IV, češkog kralja i potom cara
