Za uske puteve Amalfija
nobelovac Džon Stajnbek je
napisao da su „pažljivo dizajni-
rani da budu malo uži od dva
automobila jedan uz drugog“.
Zbog toga na njima caruju
vespe i fijat topolino, dominant-
na transportna sredstva duž
pedesetak kilometara obale.
Kada bi se sastavio spisak
poznatih koji su posetili Amal-
fijsku obalu, bila bi to poza-
mašna knjiga, veća od svakog
telefonskog imenika. Ipak, to i
dalje ostaje destinacija snova
za mnoge, a takvih je preko leta
previše, pa je lokalna turistička
ekonomija stabilna. Samo se
menja klijentela: ove godine
izostali su Italijani, zbog krize,
ali došli su Indijci.

On top of cliffs that rise a
hundred meters above the sea
lies Sorrento. The citizens of
this sea-facing town never lost
sight of Vesuvius, a volcanic
mountain on the outskirts of
Naples, on the opposite side
of the bay from Sorrento. The
beauty of the entire area, carved
into steep cliffs was created on
layers of volcanic ash, but not
from Vesuvius, infamous for
destroying Pompeii, but from
a far more powerful volcanic
crater dubbed Campi Flegrei,
the „big daddy.“
The rocks of Sorrento
and Amalfi, an area behind
Sorrento, were last expelled by
„big daddy“ 40,000 years ago.
On top of them, a civilization
was created, one that became a
synonym for beauty, relaxation
and perfect simplicity. Maybe
it‘s that very relaxed spirit, cul-
tivated for thousands of years,
embedded in the consciousness
of the locals, that was created as
a reaction to the ever-present
threat of total destruction posed
by a volcano.
The seductive turquoise sea
and the marvelous Mediterra-
nean nature have been attract-
ing visitors for 2,000 years - the
first vacation villas were built
by Roman emperors Caligula
and Augustus. But they came by
sea. The roads were carved into
rock only in the 19th century.
Of the narrow roads of
Amalfi, Nobel Prize-winner
John Steinbeck wrote „carefully
designed to be a little narrower
than two cars side by side.“
That is the reason why vespas
and Fiat Topolinos are the
dominant means of transporta-
tion along the 50-kilometer
coast.
If someone wanted to make
a list of famous people who
visited the coast of Amalfi, it
would be a doorstopper of a
book. Still, it remains a dream
vacation to many, so the local
tourist economy is stable. The
only thing that changes is the
clientele: Because of the crisis,
Italians this year elected to
vacation elsewhere, but were
replaced by Indians.
The shining blue sea, best
tomatoes in the world, large
lemons used to make the local
liqueur limoncello, the finest
smelling basil and the widely-
renowned olive oil, all serve as
