personal items, a library,
archival material, furniture and
other items – a gift of the artist
to the City of Belgrade. This
valuable collection was aban-
doned due to a misunderstand-
ing with the artist’s widow,
but after a complex long-term
process of reconstruction and
conservation, the likes of which
have never before been re-
corded in museum practices in
Serbia, it is once again attract-
ing art lovers.
The house in which these
priceless works languished
forlornly has been converted
into an authentic gallery space.
Located on the ground floor
and the first floor of this former
home and studio of Lubarda
are a gallery, workshop and a
specially secured depot, while
the basement of the museum
houses a small cafe and an ex-
hibition space to feature works
of other artists.
– This extraordinary un-
dertaking included more than
20 Serbian institutions and
departments – notes Ksenija
Samardžija, author of the
exhibition and curator of the
Belgrade Heritage House, an
institution that combines the
gifts of all Belgrade artists to
the City. – More than 50 people
participated in the reconstruc-
tion of paintings, carried out
Rođen je 1907. u oficirskoj
porodici u Ljubotinju u Crnoj
Gori, a od 1950. godine živeo
je i radio u Beogradu, gde je i
preminuo 1974. Bio je redovni
član Srpske akademije nauka
i umetnosti i Jugoslovenske
akademije znanosti i umjetno-
sti u Zagrebu.
U Beogradu se 1925.
upisao u umetničku školu,
koju je ubrzo napustio 1926.
i otišao u Pariz, gde je ostao
do 1932. i ponovo od 1938.
do 1940. Rat je proveo u
zarobljeništvu u Austriji i Ita-
liji, a po povratku u Beograd,
njegovog oca Đuru, potpu-
kovnika Vojske Kraljevine
Jugoslavije streljale su nove
komunističke vlasti.
Petar Lubarda jedan je
od najnagrađivanijih srpskih
i jugoslovenskih slikara u
inostranstvu. Osvojio je
prvu nagradu na Međuna-
rodnoj izložbi u Hagu, Gran
pri na prvoj međunarodnoj
izložbi u Parizu, Gran pri na
Bijenalu u Sao Paulu, prvu
nagradu na bijenalu u Tokiju,
godišnju Gugenhajmovu
nagradu, nagradu Umet-
ničkog društva Rabindranat
Tagor iz Kalkute i Herderovu
nagradu.

Born 1907 into an of-
ficer’s family in Ljubotinj, Mon-
tenegro, from 1950 onwards he
lived and worked in Belgrade,
where he died in 1974. He was
a full member of the Serbian
Academy of Sciences and Arts
and the Yugoslav Academy of
Sciences and Arts in Zagreb.
He enrolled in art school in
Belgrade in 1925, but soon left,
bound for Paris in 1926, where
he remained until 1932 and re-
turned from 1938 to 1940. He
spent the war years held cap-
tive in Austria and Italy, and
upon his return to Belgrade,
his father Đuro, a Lieutenant
Colonel in the Army of the
Kingdom of Yugoslavia, faced
a firing squad of the new com-
munist government.
Lubarda is one of the
most internationally awarded
Serbian and Yugoslav fine
artist. He won first prize at
the International Exhibition in
The Hague, the Grand Prix at
the first International Exhibi-
tion in Paris, the Grand Prix at
the Sao Paulo Biennial, first
prize at the Biennale in Tokyo,
the annual Guggenheim Prize,
an award of the Rabindranath
Tagore Artistic Society of Cal-
cutta and the Herder Prize.
