Opa! Oro s ovoga sveta
is a humorous dance
show with folk movements
and modern dance, folk
costumes and urban
clothing...
e
The scene is illuminated
only by blue light; the spot-
lights are directed towards a
man lying motionless. To an
electronic sound the dancer
sits up, spreads his arms, a
three-dimensional projection
of a disturbed water surface
comes to life on the screens.
The sound grows louder, play-
ing. The rhythm evokes the
emergence of another 20 danc-
ers in black suits, who move in
tiny jumps as they enclose a
circle around the first dancer.
And just when you imagine
that a futuristic performance is
about to follow – they all start
dancing the circular
kolo
, the
traditional Serbian folk dance.
Thus begins the musical
spectacle
The Dances & Sounds
of the Balkans
, of the Una Saga
Serbica dance troupe.
- We divided the pro-
gramme into segments: “Air”,
“Fire”, “Water” and “Earth”,
in accordance with the four
natural elements, - explains
Svetozar Krstić, choreogra-
pher and one of the found-
ers of the Una Saga Serbica
troupe. - Then, with displays of
mythological characters, tradi-
tions and customs like the fire
demon,
Dodola
, apparitions, we
present the way of life long ago,
and each dance element indi-
cates some part of the Balkans.
The authors’ idea was to
revive the tradition using a
modern approach and to bring
today’s audience closer to
the authentic heritage of folk
dances from different parts of
the Balkans. Original dances
are blended with modern bal-
let, folk music with electronics,
traditional aesthetics with 3D
animation, lighting effects,
streamlined costumes and a
futuristic set design.
- We want to entice the
younger audience; to familiar-

ise them with the folklore heri-
tage, and convince them that
folklore dance is not obsolete,
not out-dated and certainly not
boring – notes Krstić.
The Una Saga Serbica
Troupe numbers around 50
dancers, including ballet danc-
ers of the National Theatre in
Belgrade and numerous re-
nowned dance schools.
- The connection between
ballet, modern dance and folk-
lore, it is, after all, their roots
- adds Krstić.
