Neither Moooi, nor its founder Wanders (he founded the company in
2001, along with Casper Vissers), are interested in anything expected. Mooi
(read as it is written!) is the Dutch word for beautiful, to which the founders
added another ‘o’, in order to show immediately that they have a tendency to
surprise and ignore the rules. Or, as they say at Moooi: we want to bring the
world an extra ‘o’ for beauty and uniqueness.
All of this can also be seen at the very entrance, with Westerhuis’ foyer
adorned with Wanders’ creations. The floor has been transformed into
an unexpected floral mosaic of Bisazza glass tiles (Wanders cooperates
regularly with Italian brand Bisazza, as well as with Swarovski, Alessi, Flos,
Cappellini and Moroso). There are Wanders’ light shades (Bell Lamp), a
giant version of his bell lamps with a bow on top, with wallpaper of strong,
saturated colours...
The Moooi showroom changes constantly; the centre of the large
exhibition space currently displays a giant rocking unicorn (for adults who
do not intend to grow up completely, just like Wanders). Unexpectedly, this
completely dysfunctional piece of furniture achieved great success at this
year’s furniture fair in Milan. The unicorn is accompanied by a black coffee
table in the form of a small pig
(authored by the group Front), new
carpets with unusually precise,
striking printed patterns, “neo-
Gothic” furniture of the Job Stu-
dio, works by designers Martena
Baas, Jurgen Bey, Jaime Hayon
and Nika Zupanc ...
In short, the Moooi showroom
is nothing like a strict showroom,
with minimalist design furniture.
At Moooi they claim: our items
will excite or enrage you so much
that you will come to hate them,
but you will not forget them.
