Centrumu, postoji kvart – prekrasan,
živopisan, autentičan – skriven od raz-
uzdanih turističkih gomila. Zove se De
Jordan i podseća na londonski Noting
Hil: nekad je bio radnički, a danas je
nenametljivo bogataški, s nužnom,
urbanom primesom boemskog. Uske, zelene uličice
Jordana, bez automobila, pune su malih privatnih galeri-
ja, zanimljivih barova i bistroa, dućana lokalnih dizajnera
koji se tek probijaju ili su poznati samo upućenima.
U jednoj od glavnih aleja Jordana dizajner Marsel
Vanders (52), „Ledi Gaga dizajnerskog sveta“, kako ga
je jednom nazvao

, otvorio je Vesterhuis,
„kulturnu platformu posvećenu kreativnim industrijama
Amsterdama“.
U Vesterhuisu je Vandersov dizajnerski studio i tu je
sedište još desetak firmi koje se bave „kulturnim preduzet-
ništvom i umetnošću“ u nekadašnjoj školskoj zgradi izgra-
đenoj 1867. Tu su i jedan izložbeni prostor i prodavnica po-
znate holandske dizajnerske firme
Moooi
, koja na neki način
savršeno artikuliše Vandersov pristup dizajnu i prostoru.

At the very heart of Amsterdam, in the centre, there
exists a neighbourhood – beautiful, pictureque, authentic
– that is hidden from the masses of wild tourists. It’s called
De Jordaan and is reminiscent of London’s Notting Hill: it
used to be a workers’ neighbourhood, but today it is mod-
estly rich, with a necessary hint of urban bohemia. The nar-
row, green streets of De Jordaan are free of cars and filled
with small private galleries, interesting bars and bistros, as
well as boutique shops of local designers who are only just
breaking onto the scene or are known only to the informed.
In one of De Jordaan’s main lanes, designer Marcel
Wanders (52) – the Lady Gaga of the design world, as he
was once dubbed by the New York Times – has opened
Westerhuis, a “cultural platform dedicated to the creative
industries of Amsterdam”.
In Westerhuis is Wanders’ design studio, as well as
the headquarters of another dozen companies dealing
with “cultural entrepreneurship and the arts” in this
former school building that was erected in 1867. It also
includes the exhibition area and shop of famous Dutch
design company Moooi, which seems to perfectly articu-
late Wanders’ approach to design and space.
