Ko je u toj priči E. G. Van de Stat?

Rodio se 1910. u glavnom gradu regi-

je Zan, u Zandamu, od amsterdamske

glavne stanice udaljenom petnaestak

minuta vožnje brzim vozom koji

funkcioniše bolje nego u Švajcarskoj.

Erikus Gerhardus zvani Rikus bio je

peti sin Jana van de Stata, etablira-

nog trgovca drvnom građom. Upisao

se na studije brodogradnje, a istovre-

meno se bavio jedrenjem i još kao

student konstruisao kanu s jedrom,

koji je odmah počeo da prodaje u

nacrtu, po 25 centi komad. Tako je

započeo biznis koji je temeljno prepo-

rodio svetsku brodogradnju.

Posle fakulteta, našao je posao, ali

plata je bila loša, pa je od braće i ro-

đaka pozajmio ulog za otvaranje ma-

log brodogradilišta u bivšoj pivari na

obali Zana. U majušnim jolama koje

je gradio takmičio se na Olimpijskim

igrama i 1936. njegov tim je osvojio

zlatnu medalju. No, ne bi se posao

tako razvio da mu priliku nije pružio

drugi strastveni jedriličar, industrija-

lac Kornelijus Brajnzel iz Roterdama,

još jedan revolucionarni pronalazač.

Kornelijus je prvi počeo da pro-

izvodi ugradne kuhinje! Tridesetih

godina prošlog veka prvi je počeo da

pravi kuhinje po meri, a uspeh duguje

prethodnim dostignućima holandskih

tehničkih genija: kuhinjske elemente

Who is in this story is E.G. Van de Stadt? Born in 1910 in

the capital city of the Zaan region, Zaandam, just a fifteen-minute

train ride from Amsterdam on the fast train that functions better

than those in Switzerland. Ericus Gerhardus, known as Ricus, was

the fifth son of Jan Van de Stadt, an established timber merchant.

He enrolled to study naval architecture and as at the same time

involved in sailing, and while still a student he constructed a ca-

noe with a sail, which immediately began to pass as a draft design,

at 25 cents per unit. So began the business that would lead to the

fundamental rebirth of world shipbuilding.

After completing his university studies he found a job, but

the pay was bad, and so he borrowed a sum of money from his

brothers and cousins to pay the deposit needed to open a small

shipyard in a former brewery on the banks of the Zaan. He compe-

ted at the Olympics in the tiny sailboats that he built and in 1936

his team won gold. However, his work would not have developed

in the way it did if he hadn’t been given a chance by another avid

sailor, industrialist Cornelis Bruynzeel from Rotterdam, another

revolutionary inventor.

Cornelius was the first to start producing fitted kitchens! In

the 1930s he first started making made-to-measure kitchens and he

owed his success to previous achievements of Dutch technical ge-

nius: kitchen cabinets began to be made from plywood, as massive

solid wood was considered expensive, cumbersome and unsuitable

for the construction of doors and drawers.

Plywood is the first composite material – wood is cut thinly

at a certain angle, the leaves are then coated with synthetic glue

(another Dutch invention) and arranged so as to counter their fle-

xibility. With the addition of a water-resistant adhesive, a suitable

material for the construction of vessels was obtained.

Bruynzeel proposed that Van de Stadt construct a sport yacht

using his machine and “kitchen” technology – and so was born the

mass production of wooden boats, and Ricus began selling them in

kit form. After the war, plywood was replaced by firmer polyester
