U mestu Zandam, nedaleko od Amsterdama,
stvorena je svetska industrijska
brodogradnja. Vekovima se iz malog mesta
širio uticaj na Istok i na Zapad – tamo je
zanat učio ruski car, a lokalna porodica je do
Drugog svetskog rata posedovala veći deo
Menhetna. Ta moć je sačuvana do danas, a
preostale vetrenjače iz 16. i 17. veka na obali
reke Zan podsećaju da je to mesto nekada
bilo „pupak sveta“

It was in the city of Zaandam, not far from
Amsterdam, that global industrial shipbuilding was
created. For centuries, this little city’s impact spread
to the East and the West – it was there that the
Russian Tsar learned his craft, while a local family
possessed the greater part of Manhattan until World
War II. That power has been preserved to this day,
and the remaining 16th and 17th century windmills
along the banks of the River Zaan remind us that this
place was once the “navel of the world”
