a li je Srbija piv-
ska nacija? Po podacima Ministarstva
trgovine među deset najprodavanijih
artikala u poslednjih godinu dana nalazi
se i pivo u flaši od pola litra. U proseku,
svaki stanovnik Srbije popije po dva de-
cilitra piva dnevno. Duplo manje nego,
primera radi, stanovnici Nemačke, ali
su zato proizvodnja i prodaja ovog na-
pitka u Srbiji mnogo važniji za punjenje
državne blagajne – oko četiri odsto
budžetskih prihoda zemlje dolazi od
akciza i poreza na pivo.
Užitak za mnoge, pivo je za državu
izvor stabilnih prihoda. Ali, ne samo
za državu. Srpske pivare su u procesu
tranzicije zemlje među prvima našle
inostrane kupce koji su u međuvreme-
nu postali vlasnici tri od četiri najveće
pivare.

Is Serbia a beer nation?
According to the statistics of the
Ministry of Trade, half-litre bottle of
beer are among the ten bestselling
items in the past year. On average, each
inhabitant of Serbia drinks two decili-
tres of beer a day. This is only half the
consumption of, for example, a resident
of Germany, but then again the produc-
tion and sale of this beverage in Serbia
is much more important for filling the
state coffers – around four per cent of
the country’s budget revenue comes
from excise duties and taxes on beer.
A pleasure for many, beer is also
the source of a stable income for the
state, but not only for the state. In the
country’s transition process Serbian
breweries were among the first to find
foreign buyers, who have since become
owners of three of the country’s four
biggest breweries.
Beer, or “liquid bread”, as it was
once called, arrived in Serbia in the
Middle Ages.
