random audiences from local
cafés with a banner readier:
“Thanks for not coming”! That
prompted strong public reac-
tions, but the whole season was
sold out in advance. Among
other things, it was thanks to
such an unusual approach at-
tracting large audiences to its
concerts that the long-serving
and highly successful director
of the Belgrade Philharmonic
was appointed Minister of
Culture.
The title “Simply not for
everyone” is simply a play on
words that hides the message
that the season will be marked
by “specialised” musical cycles
– with the new season bringing
five cycles intended for “begin-
ners” and the “experienced”,
“adventurers”, “megalomani-
acs” and “those in love”.
Promoting classical music
is not easy in Serbia, a country
where folk music dominates.
The Belgrade Philharmonic
Orchestra has existed in con-
tinuity for 92 years and each
new season it strives to address
young audiences, mainly those
unaccustomed to similar con-
certs. The orchestra competes
for media space against local
pop folk music, thus it is only
strong campaigns, on the line
of causing incident, that suc-
ceeded in penetrating wider
social layers.
- Our desire is to person-
alise the Philharmonic and
its musicians – we place the
individual at the centre –
explains Jelena Milašinović,
spokeswoman for the Belgrade
phil. – We are working hard
to change the perception that
classical music is uptight.
The orchestra is not a face-
less, anonymous group, but
rather a group of 96 wonderful,
young, ambitious individuals,
dedicated to their work. The
main criterion is quality, no
kind of frivolity. So, “it’s not for
everyone”.
OPTIMIZAM
KAO DIJAGNOZA
Optimizam kao dijagnoza
Koncerti u aktuelnoj sezoni 2014/15
odvijaju se pod zajedničkim nazivom
„Optimizam kao dijagnoza“.
– Pre 15 godina više je muzičara bilo
na bini nego ljudi u publici, a danas
imamo rasprodate čitave sezone una-
pred, ne samo pojedinačne koncerte
– kaže Jelena Milašinović. – Generacija
muzičara koja je prešla taj naporan
put, susretala se s mnogim izazovima,
ali nikada ih nisu napuštali humor
i smeh. Optimizam je konstantno
stanje duha Beogradske filharmonije.
Ponosni smo što predstavljamo oazu
optimizma našoj publici, koja svakog
petka dolazi na koncerte i s nama deli
jedan drugačiji svet.
DIAGNOSIS:
OPTIMISM
Concerts in the current 2014/15
season are performed under the col-
lective title “Diagnosis: Optimism”.
- Back 15 years ago there were more
musicians on stage than people in
the audience, while today we have
an entire season sold out in advance,
not only individual concerts – says
Jelena Milašinović. – The generation of
musicians who travelled that gruelling
road encountered many challenges,
but they were never abandoned by
their humour and laughter. Optimism
is a constant state of the spirit of the
Belgrade Philharmonic. We are proud
that we present an oasis of optimism
for our audience, who comes to our
concerts every Friday and shares a
different world with us.
