n commercial aviation the
co-pilot, or first officer, is
the second pilot in the chain of
command, while the captain is the
leader of the aircraft.
A co-pilot’s duties begin even
on the ground, prior to departure.
The co-pilot checks and comple-
tes the flight plan and overviews
the meteorological conditions
along the route. He is obliged to
provide the most current so-called
„NOTAMs“ (short for Notice to
Airmen), which are official anno-
uncements of aviation institutions
in which one can read and provide
reassurances regarding the correct
functioning of all radio equipment,
airports, airspace restrictions and
procedures relevant to that day’s
flight. The co-pilot enters the cock-
pit early, in to perform all essential
checks and cockpit preparations,
checking that radio-navigation
and emergency situations equip-
ment is in working order.
It is a common misconception
that co-pilots never fly the plane.
In fact, flying duties are divided
equally between the captain and
co-pilot. At the beginning of the
day of the flight the captain deci-
des who will be the „Pilot Flying“,
i.e. the pilot that controls the pla-
ne, and who will be the „Pilot Non
Flying“, or the one who assists in
flying. The job is divided so that
one crew member flies to the de-
stination, while the other flies the
return leg back to Belgrade.
The „Pilot Non Flying“ main-
tains communication with air traf-
fic control, continuously checking
the functioning of all systems and
instruments, monitoring fuel con-
sumption and regularly updating
the flight plan. The „Pilot Flying“
operates the plane, taking care
of navigation, wind and aircraft
configuration. The co-pilot‘s post-
flight duty is to assist the captain
with administration, arranging
navigation maps and manuals in
the aircraft’s library, checking the
cockpit is orderly, packing all do-
cuments from the flight in a „flight
documents“ folder and submitting
them to the archive. By that time
all passengers have already disem-
barked from the plane.

KOPILOTA
U AVIONU
e
FIRST OFFICER’S INFLIGHT ROLE
U
komercijalnoj avijaciji ko-
pilot, ili prvi oficir, drugi je
pilot u lancu komandovanja, a
kapetan je vođa vazduhoplova.
Kopilotske dužnosti započinju
još na zemlji, pre poletanja. Kopilot
proverava i kompletira plan letenja
i sagledava meteorološku situaciju
na ruti. Obavezan je da obezbedi
najaktuelnije takozvane „notame“
(skraćenica za Notice to Airmen),
zvanična saopštenja vazduho-
plovnih institucija u kojima može
da pročita i uveri se u ispravnost
svih radio sredstava, aerodroma,
restrikcija vazdušnog prostora i
procedura relevantnih za let tog
dana. Kopilot ulazi u kokpit na
vreme da obavi sve neophodne
provere i pripreme pilotske kabine,
proveri ispravnost radionavigaci-
one opreme i opreme za vanredne
situacije.
Česta je predrasuda da kopi-
lot nikada ne upravlja avionom.
Letačke dužnosti su, međutim, pod-
jednako podeljene između kapeta-
na i kopilota. Na početku letačkog
dana kapetan odlučuje o tome ko će
biti „Pilot Flying“, to jest onaj koji
upravlja avionom,a ko će biti „Pilot
Non Flying“ – onaj koji asistira u
letenju. Posao je podeljen tako da
jedan član posade leti na destinaci-
ju, a drugi u povratku za Beograd.
„Pilot Non Flying“ komuni-
cira s kontrolom letenja, stalno
proverava rad svih sistema i in-
strumenata, prati potrošnju goriva
i redovno ažurira plan leta. „Pilot
Flying“ upravlja avionom, vodi
računa o navigaciji, vetru i konfi-
guraciji aviona.
Posle leta, kopilotska dužnost
je da pomogne kapetanu oko
administracije, složi navigacione
mape i priručnike u biblioteku
aviona, proveri urednost kokpita,
spakuje sva dokumenta sa leta u
kovertu „flight documents“ i dosta-
vi ih u arhivu. Do tada su već svi
putnici izašli iz aviona.
