eograd je jedan od retkih gradova
koji se prostiru na obalama dveju
reka: Save i Dunava.
istok i zapad, sever i jug Evrope.
Samim tim,
stranu.
Samo u poslednjih devedeset godina
reke Beograda ne predstavljaju granicu, liniju

Belgrade is one of the few cities to
sprawl over the banks of two rivers: in this case
the Sava and the Danube. The total length of
riverbanks in the city totals 270 kilometres, not
including the six river islands on the territo-
ry of the city, which is about the same length
as the Montenegrin coastline. At the same
time, there are few cities on great rivers that
have not utilised the banks, as is the case with
Belgrade. There are very few parts of the city
that could be said to be “on the water”.
For this part of Serbia and Belgrade the
rivers were always borders; they did not bring
together but rather separated, not only dif-
ferent states and empires, but also East and
West, Northern and Southern Europe.
Historically, the rivers protected the city
on the one hand, but there were also dangers
– enemies could always appear on the waters.
Only the right bank of both rivers was inhab-
ited, not counting Zemun, which developed
as a separate town. As such, the rivers were

high and with residential units, commer-
cial spaces, hotels, a roof garden and a
viewing area.
