For the last six decades,
all those who have found
themselves in trouble on
difficult mountain terrain, or
injured and stranded on the
ski slopes of Serbia, have been
assisted swiftly and effectively
by a network of experienced,
courageous, professional and
well-organized rescuers; the
”guardian angels” of Serbia’s
mountains, canyons and nature
reserves. Dressed in distinc-
tive red jackets, the more than
250 members of the Mountain
Rescue Service of Serbia are
on duty every day, cruising the
mountain massifs. They have
been a trademark of Serbian
mountaineering for decades.
Paradoxically, these people
are volunteers, their organiza-

not funded by the state. Their
status is even legally defined as
a ”strategic partnership” with
state institutions responsible
for emergency response.

become so recognisable among
hikers and nature lovers
that its name and logo have
developed into their own kind
of internationally recognised
guarantees of the highest level
of assistance for those in need.

the Mountain Rescue Service
of Serbia – to help all those who
find themselves in trouble in
inaccessible, mountainous or
urban settings. The Moun-
tain Rescue Service is called
whenever special techniques
and knowledge are required in
order to reach injured people,
provide first aid and enable fast
and safe transportation.
This was the case dur-
ing the great floods that hit
Serbia last May, when rescuers
evacuated more than 1,200
people from inundated areas.
The Mountain Rescue Service
of Serbia operates in a very
wide range of locations and
conditions: on ski slopes and in
general mountain conditions,
