Utovreme, na graničnom prostoru između tvrđave i varoši, počinjuda se grade i otvaraju kalemegdanski hoteli. Jedan od njih je hotel Nacional, koji niče na mestu stare mehane. U hotelu je, poslerazvoda, živeočuveni književnik Milovan Glišić, a 1892. kupuje ga državnik Nikola Pašić.
