We have convinced our-
selves of that, during the last
concert of the season, on a
warm June day. In that quiet
Central European town virtu-
ally nothing happened on that
Sunday afternoon prior to the
concert, except for a modest ex-
hibition of vintage cars from
the period of deep socialism -
Tatra, Skoda, Lada, Vaz and a
few Trabants, acted grotesquely
on an empty central square.
And then, suddenly, the
Janáček opera hall – the opera
stage of the National Theatre
in Brno – with 1,500 seats, was
filled to capacity, with many be-
ing unable to find room. The
crowd, formally dressed, of-
ten in the long forgotten fash-
ion of a classless society, came
to participate in the formation
of magical moments which,
for unprepared guests like us,
came without warning, from
the first note echoing through
the hall.
At some points it was not
clear which parts of the hall
had the more powerful emo-
tions – on the brightly lit stage
or in the darkened background.
In the centre of the stage, the
creation of these extraordinary
moments was encouraged and
guided by a young Belgrader
from a musical family, the son
of Vlada from the celebrated
duo „Vlada and Bajka“.
- Conducting is an elusive
occupation. Precisely what we
do cannot be easily proven –
he adds.
The Brno audience and
Philharmonic certainly do
not think this is so. Thanks to
the magic conductor’s wand
of Aleksandar Marković, this
sleepy town was sudden-
ly brought to life with the
sounds of Dvoržak, Smeta-
na and Janáček, experiencing
great vision, space and depth,
depicted in the final Taras
Bulba.
