108 | Istorija » History JUBI LEJ / JUBI LEE Belgrade hosts historic conference The Republic of Serbia, together with the Republic of Azerbaijan, which is currently presiding over the Non-Aligned Movement, will host a commemorative gathering to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the First NAMConference, which was held in Belgrade back in 1961 Belgrade, as a kind of “birthplace” of the NonAligned Movement, where its first Summit was held back in 1961, holds special historical symbolismas the city where confirmation was given to the then newly established Bandung principles, which “laid the foundation” upon which the Non-Aligned Movement still stands today. This gathering will provide an important opportunity for the Non-Aligned Movement to review its historical contribution, reaffirm its commitment to the fundamental principles of the UnitedNations Charter and support for a global order based on multilateralism, as well as to set new goals for the future. TheNon-AlignedMovement todayboasts120member states, representing almost two-thirds of UNmembers, while another 18 states have observer status. The activities of the Movement are led by the presiding country, a position which has to date been held by Yugoslavia (twice), Egypt (twice), Zambia, Algeria, Sri Lanka, Cuba (twice), India, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Colombia, South Africa, Malaysia, Iran and Venezuela. The presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement is currently held by Azerbaijan, for the 2019-2022 period. The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) played a leading role in the Non-Aligned Movement fromits inception.The first conference of heads of state and government of the Non-Aligned Movement was held in Belgrade, from1st to 6th September 1961, while the ideological creators of that event are considered as having been the presidents of key countries: Yugoslavia - Josip Broz Tito; Egypt (then the United Arab Republic) - Gamal Abdel Nasser; Ghana - Kwame Nkrumah; Indonesia – Sukarno; and the first PrimeMinister of India - Jawaharlal Nehru.
