Svake godine, sredinom juna, reka Tisa „procveta“ u

donjem toku.

do parenja. Mužjaci umiru odmah posle svadbenog

plesa, a ženke čim polože jaja.

i Srbije. Gradi i Kanjiža i Novi Bečej na severu Srbije,

organizuju svake godine festivale i pra enje fenomena sa

čamaca.

In mid-June every year the River Tisza “blooms” in its

lower section. This is a natural phenomenon when millions

of insects of the Tisza Flower species emerge from the wa-

ter to spend their short lives, lasting only a few hours, and

serving their purpose – the procreation of the species.

The Tisza Flower is a type of ancient mayfly that 200

million years old, has a length of eight to twelve centimetres

and lives in only one place in Europe: the mud of the River

Tisza. Their emergence in the “blooming” occurs when the

larvae rise to the surface of the river after three years living

in the mud, turning into airborne insects and living only until

they mate. The males die immediately after the mating

dance, while the females succumb as soon as they lay their

eggs. Their collective act of procreation has become an at-

traction that entices an increasing number of observers.

Biologists have determined that this golden insect with

large black eyes lives exclusively along the Tisza in Hungary

and Serbia. The small northern Serbian towns of Kanjiža

and Novi Bečej organize annual festivals and monitor the

phenomenon from rowing boats.
