šta vam je na umu
/ what’s on your mind
Prošlogodišnji dobitnik nagrade, skulptor
Marko Marković, ističe da su proces umetnič-
kog odmeravanja, upoređivanja i učestvovanja
na konkursu, izložba finalista i samostalna
izložba pobednika, najznačajniji aspekti na-
grade.
Izložbu, koja će biti otvorena do 29.
avgusta, priredili su kustosi Miroslav Karić
(Nezavisna umetnička asocijacija Remont)
i Una Popović (Muzej savremene umetnosti
u Beogradu). Oni smatraju da je retrospek-
tiva bivših laureata nagrade „Mangelos“, sa
toliko različitih umetničkih pristupa i medija
u kojima se izražavaju, jedan od mogućih na-
goveštaja u kom pravcu se razvija umetnička
scena nakon 2000. godine.
Izložba, nesumnjivo, daje povod za raz-
mišljanje o mestu vizuelne umetnosti u Srbiji
danas i o položaju mladih umetnika, najčešće
prepuštenih ličnoj inicijativi i entuzijazmu.
Ali, makar u svečanom trenutku obeleža-
vanja jubileja, valjalo bi setiti se saveta ame-
ričkog umetnika Sola Levita koji je inspirisao
umetnike širom sveta i sada krasi zidove
mnogih umetničkih ateljea:
„Jednostavno prestani da razmišljaš, bri-
neš, osvrćeš se preko ramena, preispituješ, sum-
njaš, plašiš se, tuguješ, nadaš se lakom rešenju,
boriš se, pokušavaš da shvatiš… RADI.
Stvori svoj, samo svoj svet. … Imaš pravo
na to. …

who left a deep mark on the art of the
former Yugoslavia in the 1970s. Bašičević is
among the most prominent representatives
of the world of conceptual art, as indica-
ted by his exhibitions in the world’s major
museums, such as New York’s MoMA and
London’s Tate Gallery. This year saw a ma-
jor retrospective of his works held in New
York’s Freeman Gallery.
The award is part of the network of
awards for visual artists in ten Eastern Euro-
pean countries. The network emerged as an
initiative launched in 1990 in Czechoslovakia
by writer Vaclav Havel, who later became the
President of the Czech Republic. Intended
to enable young artists to gain international
experience, the award provides them with
several months of study and residency in the
United States. The jury includes young art
historians, curators and artists.
Last year’s winner of the prize, sculptor
Marko Marković, says that the most impor-
tant aspects of the prize are the measure-
ment of the artistic process, comparison and
participation in the competition, as well as
the exhibition of the finalists and the win-
ner’s solo exhibition.
The exhibition, which will be open un-
til 29
th
August, was organised by curators
Miroslav Karić (of Independent Art Asso-
ciation Remont) and Una Popović (of the
Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade).
They consider that the retrospective of
former Mangelos laureates, with so many
different artistic approaches and media
with which they express themselves, is one
of the possible indications of the direction
in which the art scene has developed since
the year 2000.
The exhibition undoubtedly provides
reason for reflection on the place of the
visual arts in Serbia today and the position
of young artists, who are mostly left to their
personal initiative and enthusiasm.
However, if only for the ceremonious
moment of the jubilee, it is worth remem-
bering the advice of the American Artist
Sol LeWitt, who inspired artists around the
world and now adorns the walls of many art
studios:
“Just stop thinking, worrying, looking
over your shoulder, wondering, doubting,
fearing, hurting, hoping for some easy way
out, struggling, grasping… just DO!
“Create your own, only your own world.
... You have the right to that. ... And stop wor-
rying about big, deep things such as ‚to deci-
de on a purpose and way of life, a consistant
approach to even some impossible end or
even an imagined end‘ ... Just let everything
go wherever it pleases – you are not respon-
sible for the world – you are only responsible
for your work.“
