šta vam je na umu
/ what’s on your mind
zapravo je statua sportiste oveko-
večenog u trenutku posle takmiče-
nja. Grčka reč ’apoksiomen’ znači
’strugač’, sportista koji čisti telo od
ulja koje se s prašinom i znojem
pretvorilo u gustu smesu što pre
kupanja treba skinuti malom alat-
kom, strugalicom (strigilom).
Antički sportisti u Grčkoj uvek
su se takmičili neodeveni, jer se
verovalo da se na spoljašnju lepo-
tu prirodno nadovezuju i čestitost,
vrlina. Pre svakog „nastupa“ maza-
li su nago telo uljem da ga zaštite
od sunca, ali, još više, da istaknu
njegovu lepotu.
Apoksiomen, „strugač“, bio
je čest motiv grčkih skulptora. U
Vatikanskom muzeju posebno
se čuva rimska mermerna kopija
poznatog Lizipovog Strugača.
Zašto je lošinjski Apoksiomen
tako dragocen? Jer je grčkih bron-
zanih skulptura, kojih je u antičko
vreme bilo na hiljade, sačuvano
veoma malo. Većina je istopljena,
uništena, a od nekih postoje samo
delovi...
U bečkom Muzeju istorije
umetnosti (Kunsthistorisches
Museum) čuva se Strugač iskopan
krajem 19. veka pored turskog gra-
da Efesa. Ta skulptura sastavljena
je od preko 200 komadića, a lošinj-
ski Apoksiomen je gotovo neošte-
ćen. Osim toga, postoje opravdane
sumnje da je skulptura koja se
čuva u Beču ipak rimska kopija
grčke statue, dok su se stručnjaci
složili da je lošinjski Apoksiomen
zaista grčki, nastao verovatno u
drugom veku pre nove ere.
Sve u vezi s lošinjskim
Apoksiomenom kao da je bilo u
znaku srećnog slučaja. Da nije
pao u procep između dva kamena,
završio bi u pesku i more bi ga
zauvek progutalo.
Nije jasno kako se skulptura
našla u severnom delu Jadrana.
Istraživanje preko pedeset hiljada
kvadratnih metara oko mesta na
kojem je Apoksiomen pronađen,
nije otkrilo tragove potopljenog
broda. Zašto se našao u moru?
Da li je ispao za vreme oluje ili
je izbačen kao deo tereta kad je
pretila opasnost da brod bude po-
topljen? Nema podataka, kao što
se samo može pretpostaviti da je

Everything about the Lošinj
Apoxyomenos is as though it was
in the sign of serendipity. Had it
not fallen into a gap between two
rocks, it would have ended up in
the sand and the sea would have
swallowed it forever.
It is not clear how the sculp-
ture was found in the northern
part of the Adriatic. Research over
an area of 50 thousand square
metres around the place where the
Apoxyomenos was found did not
reveal any trace of a sunken ship.
So why did it find itself in the sea?
Did it fall overboard because of a
storm or was it discarded as excess
weight when a ship was threatened
with sinking? There is no informa-
tion, just as it can only be assumed
that it travelled as a valuable asset
from one of the villas of Roman
patricians, perhaps in Brioni, or in
Trieste, Aquileia, Poreč etc.
The time of its travel was
accidentally discovered thanks to a
hollow in the interior of the sculp-
ture. In it was found a mouse’s nest,
perfectly embalmed under the sea,
with the remains of a mouse feast
– several olive and cherry stones
(with bite marks!). Scientists dis-
covered that the twigs and leaves
originate from the first century,
when the sculpture was probably
restored in Rome before travelling
to a provincial Roman villa.
The museum opened twenty
years after the discovery of the
sculpture. Restoration lasted six
years. It was worked on by experts
of the Zagreb Conservation Insti-
tute in collaboration with experts
in the restoration of ancient metals
from Florence. The whole process
of removing deposits from the
seabed was done patiently, with
handheld scalpels.
When the bronze statue of the
perfectly polished body, which at
a certain angle even reveals the
veins on the hands of the athlete,
shone in its full beauty, it again
went on a journey: first around
Croatian cities, and then around
the world. It has been displayed
at the British Museum in London,
the Louvre in Paris, the Paul Getty
Museum in Los Angeles...
Visitors of the museum in Mali
Lošinj have a chance to watch, like
a thriller, a film about the details
of the restoration. The museum is
