Completing the exhibition are keyworks of romantic landscapes and Austrian watercolours from the 19th century, such as Jakob Alt’s famed Viennese cityscape. The majority of the featured works were acquired by Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen (1738-1822), founder of themuseum’s collection. Hetookaspecial interest inlarge-format, painting-like landscape drawings of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He collected landscapes by Adrian Zingg and his pupils, because of their artistic qualities, but also because of feelings of nostalgia forhisoldhomelandofSaxony. Itwas particularly during the final years of his life thatDukeAlbert concentratedoncollecting landscapepaintings, an extraordinary selection of which will be presented in this exhibition.
