First established in1951, the Berlin International FilmFestival, also known as the Berlinale, has evolved over the years to become one of the most important international film festivals. It was on 6th June 1951 that AlfredHitchcock’s Rebecca, starring Joan Fontaine, opened the first ever Berlin International FilmFestival at the Titania-Palast cinema inWest Berlin. With much of Berlin then still in ruins as a result of the recent war, Fontaine came to Berlin as the festival’s first “star guest”.
