Jahn HOL I DAY FOR THE SOU L Jungle on tarmac A genuine mini eco wonder in Nantes is inspiring considerations of green life FROMTHERADICALIDEAOF ENTRUSTINGENTIRECITIES to artists, totheprincipleof sustainable existenceandoperational approaches that will save the world – it seems as though the time has finally come for ustoseeksalvationfromthedevastating consequences of global warming through a different viewof our daily life. One irresistibly unconventional endeavour that has demonstrated the importance of greenery inurban areas is simultaneously both an artistic performance and a manifesto of ecological principles - but it is first and foremost a celebration for the eyes and a holiday for the soul. This permanent exhibition, called “Jungle Interieure”, is the creation of the French artist known as Evor. Evor arrived inNantes in1994, tobeginattending the city’sfine arts school, and immediately fell in love with the city’s poetic panorama. His love for plants and greenery led to him cultivating a hanging garden in the small courtyard of a private passageway: aminiature, completely naturalwonderland that he cares for everyday. However, thegardengrew from a passionate pastime to a real project. And today it is among the top Instagramsensations –not only of this city, but also theentire region. “The ideabehindthisgardenis to blend plants of all horizons – continental, exotic, Mediterranean, wild, hybrid, “weeds”, grasses, trees, bushes, creepers…” says Evor, explaining how every visual gift of Mother Nature’s greenery emerged in the same place, in a joyful, unrestricted mix. IN SILENCE, WITH RESPECT It is advised that this urban oasis be approached in respectful silence – especially during the climb up the wooden stairs that form part of the exhibition – and the reward comes in the form of a divine view of the nearby church.
