CLEMENTINUM, PRAGUE This wonderful library is an excellent example of Baroque architecture, thanks to the fact that it hasn’t changed since the day it opened in 1722. The walls and ceiling are decorated with frescoes that combine representations of the arts and sciences. Dominating the centre of the hall are large globes, while the library’s fund includes around 20,000 books that are mostly related to theology, some of which date all the way back to the 16th century. Crna kocka spolja očarava linijama, sjajnim crnim granitom i staklenom površinom, dok iznutra ima krivudave oblike, široke prostore i pokretne stepenice. BLACK DIAMOND, COPENHAGEN The Black Diamond is a classy yet understated addition to an older building. Jutting onto the waterfront like a docked ship, its huge slanted glass wall provides a view of the adjacent marina. The building is constituted into two halves, united by bridges across a central atrium that doubles as a symbol of the unity between Denmark’s past and present. The black cube is mesmerising on the outside, with its otherworldly lines and glossy black granite and glass surface, while on the inside it boasts twisting forms, wide spaces and escalators. PHILOLOGICAL LIBRARY, BERLIN The interior of the Philological Library is impressive, as the design utilises curves and clean white lines to give the entire building a kinetic feel, with the bookshelves and reader stations acting like interconnected neurons. The brain metaphor is continued as the room splits into two hemispheres that gradually narrow in size until they reach the closing of the cupola. The building truly feels alive, as it possesses a double ‘skin’ shell on its walls that can close and open in response to Berlin’s varying climate.
