This group exhibition aims to present Serbia’s contemporary art scene at the intersection between generations, styles and the techniques that the selected authors use to deal with current topics that they wish to address critically and bring to the attention of the audience. The exhibition leads us on a journey of transformation, from source to materialisation, from figuration to abstraction. The path taken by artists in Serbia from initial idea to final materialisation, but also the way in which each of them individually asserts themselves, is the same for every generation and for all styles – filled with self-sacrifice, dedicationandprofessionalism. It isprecisely this exertionandwork, sometimes over the course of multiple decades, that reflects the originalitythat’s characteristicof contemporary Serbian fine art. “The symbolism of “finding a way” is depicted in several aspects. There’s the desire to emphasise how thorny the path is from a work’s actual creation to its final destination: theaudience inWashington, but also the importance of international exchanges of ideas and universal visibility. It poses the question of how one candistinguishoneself inanenvironment of endless mass production, despite the fact that it appears at first glance as though new technologies have created amultitude of newchannels.Eachof thenineartists (Vladislav Šćepanović, Nikola Kolja Božović, Goran Čpajak, Aleksandar LekaMladenović, Đorđe Stanojević, Jovanka Mladenović, Ivan Milenković, TijanaKojić andVukVučković) defined their own original style and constructed their ownexpression in ways that differ from the strong Yugoslav school of fine art that dominated the secondhalf of the20th century, thus creating a framework for the furtherdevelopmentof free, contemporaryartistic thought inSerbia. And there’s also the question of the extent to which cultural diplomacy can influence the formationof opinions and the conveying of amessage provided one finds the right way to address the presentationof one segment of culture – in this case, contemporary fine art,” explainsMarija Milošević, headodArt forAll gallery.
