Za samo desetak metara premašila je visinu od 500metara, što je uslov da bi se neko uzvišenje moglo nazvati planinom. Spomenik neznanom junaku, delo vajara Ivana Meštrovića, smešten na mestu bivšeg srednjovekovnog grada Žrnova, Rimski bunar, rudarsko okno iz 6. veka, Avalski toranj – samo su neke od njenih atrakcija, a tu je i vidikovac s kog se pruža jedan od najlepših pogleda na Beograd. Pod šumom je više od 370 hektara, a na zaštićenom području raste oko 600 biljnih vrsta. AVALA Avala is the closest mountain to Belgrade (the city’s public transport even extends to it) and it exceeds the height of 500metres – the lower limit for the classification of a mountain – by just ten metres. The Monument to the Unknown Hero, a work of sculptor Ivan Meštrović, stands on the site of the former medieval town of Žrnovo, while some of its other attractions include a Roman well, a 6th century mining shaft and Avala Tower. There is also an observation point that provides one of the most beautiful views of Belgrade. It has more than 370 hectares of forests and its protected area is home to around 600 species of plants. It has eight peaks exceeding an elevation of 1,000metres above sea level, the highest of which is Cvijić’s Peak (1,132m), which can be reached via marked trails in three and a half hours. A special adventure is considered as ascending to theOstrvica, a steep volcanic peak that is home to the remains of amedieval fortress, which legend links to the demise of Irene Kantakouzene, aka Damned Jerina.
