Niš is a city that’s known throughout Serbia for its energetic atmosphere and absolutely unbeatable food, but located just nine kilometres to the east of the city is one of the country’smost popular spa centres. The spa is located in the foothills of the DryMountain, which provides this idyllic scene with an additional element. Niška Banja is a tourist destination that’s awash with hot healing water springs that have been known since the time of the ancient Romans. It has since found its place in every subsequent epoch, combining its natural wealth with people’s lives. Niška Banja has long been known for its favourable qualities and as a centre of healing, and the spa itself still contains remains from that period, in the formof a Roman bathhouse with two pools richly decorated inmosaics. Also testifying to the claim that Niška Banja’smineral-rich water has exceptional healing qualities is the fact that water from the spa was supplied to the baths and swimming pools of ancient Mediana, the luxurious Roman imperial residence dating back to the time of Constantine the Great. During theOttoman period, Niška Banja was the preferred resort of Sultan Suleiman. Amoderate-continental climate and more than 70 hectares of forests have a placating effect and are also extremely beneficial for treatment and recovery. Niška Banja has five individual healing water springs that belong to the group of earth-alkaline homeotherms (temperature of 36-38°C), enriched with a high concentration of minerals. This spa town is surrounded by numerous sites of natural beauty, so you shouldn’t miss out on excursions to Sićevo Gorge, representing the canyon of the River Nišava, and Jelašnica Gorge, which is classed as a special nature reserve. Vrnjačka Banja Niška Banja It might be small and quaint, but Vrnjačka Banja is nonetheless among Serbia’smost popular towns. People have been coming here to heal since Roman times, and there are no signs that theywill stop anytime soon. This queen of spa tourism, as the town is informally dubbed, has been renowned for its healing springs since ancient times. It was on this site that the Romans built the Fons Romanusmedical spa and hot water spring. Best testifying to the repute of thewaters of this spa in ancient times are the numerous gold coins found in the area. Romans would throw contemporary coins into thewells. Apart fromgold coins dating back to the period from the 2nd to the 4th century AD, the remains of an ancient swimming pool have also been found in this spa town. It was back in the 1830s that PrinceMiloš Obrenović engaged geologists to conduct testing on themineral waters here. They rated very highly, comparable in quality to thewaters of theCzech spa town of Karlovy Vary. However, the spa still had towait another 30 years to receive itsmodern development and thus become a very popular destination among the Serbian aristocracy. Vrnjačka Banja is located inCentral Serbia’s Raška district, in the valley of the West Morava River, just 200 km from Belgrade and 25 km fromKraljevo. It is protected to the south, east andwest byGočmountain, while it is protected from the northwinds by theGledić mountain range. There are seven thermal springs here, providing discerning visitors with plenty of choices, and the spa’s first doctor inmodern historywas the famous Josif Pančić. The hot waters here represent a unique source of mineral water anywhere inworld, as thewater temperature is exactly the same as the average temperature of the human body: 36.50 C. Vrnjačka Banja’smineral-richwater belongs to the type of alkaline carbon-acidic thermal water. je temperaturamineralne vode u Vrnjačkoj Banji, koliko iznosi i prosečna temperatura ljudskog tela Thewater temperature in Vrnjačka Banja is exactly the same as the average temperature of the human body: 36.50 C Foto: „Uros Zunic zunicuros@gmail.com“ Foto: Kostadin Kamenov Foto: Serbia Pictures: Adam Radosavljevic / Alamy / Profimedia
