RAVANICAMONASTERY Ravanica Monastery is located approximately 10 km to the east of Ćuprija, on the road to Despotovac, and represents the most impressive edifice of the Morava School of architecture. This monastery is the largest and main endowment of Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović. His mortal remains were first transferred to Ravanica in 1392. Then, following the Great Serb Migration of 1690, the relics of this holy prince were relocated to the town of Szentendre near Budapest, from whence they were quickly moved to Vrdnik, where they remained until being moved to Belgrade in 1942, only to finally be returned, with great honours, to this endowment of Lazar in 1989. Njih tri veka, a možda i duže, ljudi nisu prekršili. A to znači – potpuno očuvana priroda, bez i najmanje ljudske intervencije. RAINFOREST Vinatovača and Busovata already represent strictly protected nature reserves of the Kučaj-Beljanica massif that are known for their preserved beech forests of very high quality. Many of the trees here are over 200 years old, while some beech trees have grown into real giants – reaching heights of 46 metres and a trunk diameter exceeding a metre. This protected natural asset is one of the most impressive elements of the relief of Kučaj and one of the Balkans’ most important centres of biodiversity. Vinatovača is a rainforest that’s governed by only one rule – the one prescribed by nature. This rule hasn’t been violated by the people for three centuries, and maybe longer. The result, naturally, is captivating… Apart from fascinating greenery, in this rainforest you’ll also find a wide variety of flora and fauna. We must not forget to mention the soothing sounds of the left tributary of the river Resava - the Vinatovac stream. Its murmuring and perfectly clean air will transport you to some other dimension, one where nature is left to its own devices. The Vinatovac rainforest is under a strict regime of protection – felling trees is prohibited, and picking plants isn’t even permitted. Another characteristic of this surreal paradise on earth is not only that no tree has been cut down here, but that none of those that have fallen have even been taken away or relocated. Quite simply, when a tree here falls under the weight of snow, due to the wind or out of old age, it remains in the rainforest and is not touched. And that means: completely preserved nature, without even the slightest human intervention.
