44 | STALNA POSTAVKA NARODNOGMUZEJA / PERMANENT EXHIBITIONOFTHENATIONALMUSEUM Slika Tahićanka je vredno platno iz poslednјe stvaralačke fаze Pola Gogena. Sunčani jesenji predeo koncipiran je realistički, izveden sigurnom rukom u neverovatno harmoničnom spletu vizuelnog i emotivnog doživljaja, objektivnog i subjektivnog trenutka. Slika predstavlja ostvarenje potpunog sklada. Serbia’s oldest central museum, the National Museum in Belgrade, o ers visitors – within the scope of its permanent exhibition, on an area of 5000m2 – the possibility to acquaint themselves with the arts and cultures that have come and gone on the territory of Serbia and the region from the Palaeolithic era to the 20th century. Paja Jovanović immortalised many in uential people of his time, with his brush. For the Portrait of Mihailo Pupin, Jovanović painted the famous scientist in his research laboratory in the U.S. in 1903. The portrait accentuates Pupin’s clear and visionary eyes, which suggest to the observer the world of inventions and unprecedented discoveries to which humanity is indebted to this scientist. Thanks principally to Pupin’s personal e orts and generous funds, in addition to donating this portrait to the National Museum, Pupin donated another nine masterpieces of 19th century Serbian ne art. The painting Autumnal Road occupies an exceptional place among the works of Sava Šumanović. That’s not because it was one of his last works, nor one of his most popular, but because in it he achieved a synthesis of his creative work thus far, his most mature artistic expression. The sunny autumnal landscape is conceptualised realistically, executed with a steady hand in an incredibly harmonious fusion of visual and emotional experience, an objective and subjective moment. The picture represents the realisation of complete harmony. SAVA ŠUMANOVIĆ, JESENJI PUT / AUTUMNAL ROAD, 1941 The Tahitian Girl picture is a valuable canvas from Paul Gauguin’s last phase of creative work. Fleeing the conventionalism, duplicity and arrogance of Parisian society from the beginnings of the era of consumerism, Gauguin nds physical and spiritual refuge in the islands of French Polynesia. Whilst living with the natives, Gauguin reshapes his artistic expression and palette, nding motifs among scenes from the lives of islanders, in a landscape untouched by civilisation. It was in 1935 that this painting of a young Tahitian girl was donated to the National Museum, which was then called Prince Pavle’s Museum, by the prince’s personal friend, Georges Viejo.
