Because of this, Vienna has an incredibly rich
cultural life, perhaps more than any other European
metropolis, in part due to the large budget for cultural
events. At any given moment the city hosts multiple
major exhibitions; right now, for example, Belvedere has
Monet, Joan Miró is at the Albertina, Velasquez is at
the Kunsthistorisches Museum and there’s a Toulouse-
Lautrec exhibition at the Kunstforum. Then there are also
about fifty theatre performances, music events etc.
This is why Vienna has seen several new hotels open
recently, chief among them being the Kempinski, for-
merly known as the Palais Hansen. But, as the locals say,
there’s only one hotel in the city that can truly be called
a palace – Hotel Imperial. It celebrated its 140
th
birthday
this year with a detailed renovation of the ground floor.
The Hotel Imperial was built as a princely palace sev-
eral years before the Opera. It was built by Duke Philipp
of Württemberg after Emperor Franz Joseph gave the
famous decree “It is my will” (Es Ist Meine Wille), with
which he ordered the demolition of the old, medieval city
walls and called the elite to take that space and construct
palaces worthy of the Imperial metropolis.
Philipp, the Duke of Württemberg, didn’t stay long
in his city palace, which was designed by Leopold von
Zenetti in a Neo-renaissance style. Allegedly, he became
enraged when the Musikverein was built for the Vienna

Beč zbog toga danas
ima i neverovatno bogat
kulturni život, možda bo-
gatiji od bilo koje evrop-
ske metropole, jer je i
bečki budžet za kulturu
ogroman. U njemu se
istovremeno održavaju
brojne velike izložbe; u
ovom trenutku, recimo, u
Belvedereu je Mone, Miro
je u Albertini, Velaskes je u
Muzeju istorije umetnosti,
u Kunstforumu je izložba
Tuluz Lotreka. A onda do-
lazi pedesetak pozorišta,
zatim muzika...
Upravo zato, u Beču
je u poslednje vreme
otvoreno i nekoliko novih
hotela; spomenimo samo
Kempinski, nekadašnji Pale
Hansen. No, kako kažu
Bečlije, u njihovom gradu
postoji samo jedan hotel
koji je istinska palata – ho-
tel Imperijal. Ove je godine
proslavio 140. godišnjicu
detaljnim, brižljivim renovi-
ranjem celog prizemlja.
