Documentaries » Dokumentarci | 35 WOR L D ’ S B EST DOCUMEN TAR I ES AT B E L DOCS FromSpike Lee to Pink Floyd The rich programme of the 14th edition of the Beldocs International Documentary Film Festival, from9th to 16th September, will include the screening of more than 100 documentaries in Belgrade The9th September opening of the Beldocs festival, in the open-air setting of the amphitheatre in front of the Museum of Yugoslavia, will feature a screening of the film ‘Faith and Branko’. Directed by Catherine Harte, this intimate documentary follows the love and relationship of two musicians, British accordionist Faith Elliot and Roma violinist Branko Rosić. The domestic competition programmebrings together sevenof the latest documentaries made under the scope of Serbian cinematography or as co-productionswith countries from the region, Europe and the wider world, including two that had theirworldpremieres at prestigious foreign film festivals. Arriving from the competition programme of the Rotterdamfestival is the film ‘Landscapes of Resistance’ byMarta Popivoda, which depicts a journey through the memories of anti-fascist fighter Sonja (97), one of the first Yugoslav Partisans and one of the leaders of the resistance movementatAuschwitz,whileTeaLukač’s conceptual documentary ‘Roots’ arrives in Belgrade from the "East of theWest" competition programme of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Eleven films from all corners of the world will be screened as part of the international competitionprogramme. Includedamongst themare:NikolayN. Viktorov's documentary from the far north of Russia, ‘Beaumonde Scrapping / Чермет’, about the harsh realities of the struggle for secondary rawmaterials; the depiction of the declineof aPortuguese community in André Guiomar’s documentary ‘OurLand,OurAltar’; and thevisually impressiveArgentine film‘Ski’ by Manque La Banca, which depicts all the complexities of colonialismand fashion inSouthAmerica. The audience will watch Vitaly Mansky’s film about Mikhail Gorbachev entitled simply ‘Gorbachev. Heaven’, while the American film ‘DavidByrne'sAmericanUtopia’, directed by famous filmmaker Spike Lee, follows a Broadway performance of singer-songwriter David Byrne’s famous show, which ismore than a mere show and actually represents a work of art with crystallised messages of social responsibility, attitudes and lessons about modern society and an order that compels the viewer to think. Beldocs provides anopportunity for the audience to spend almost five hours in the darkened cinema auditorium, or four and a half hours (272minutes, tobeprecise), andenjoy the documentary ‘City Hall’, in whichthevivaciousFrederickWeissman (91), who continues to make films in the tenth decade of his life, illustrates theadministrationofBoston Mayor Marty J. Walsh.
