Oktobar

MY LIFEAT THE YOUTHCENTRE I’ve been at the Belgrade YouthCentre almost since it was founded, and I’mconnected to this venue bymany fondmemories and events, both professional and private. Already as a teenager, back in 1966, I started comingwithmy friends to this then new youth centre, which offeredmany interesting programmes in one place, andwherewe socialisedwith our peers fromBelgrade’smany neighbourhoods. It was there, a fewyears later, that I met my futurewife Rada, whowas employed at the YouthCentre. And then, in 1993, by a twist of fate, I also startedworking at this place, which in themeantime had gained a cult status on the city’s culture scene. Both during the timewhen I was just part of the audience and later, when I became part of the collective, October was always themost important month for DomOmladine, because it is then that the Belgrade Jazz Festival is held. It has always beenmore than a festival, both for musicians and for the audience, but also for the employees. It is ameeting place for all generations and for different people, who come together in their love for this specificmusic genre. With the declaring of its status as an event of special importance to theCity of Belgrade, we received the highest recognition in our own city. With the invitation to become amember of the prestigious, representative European jazz network, as the only such festival fromSerbia, we received the highest international professional recognition. And each year we also receive themost important recognition, fromnew, young people in packed concert halls. I can statewith pride that DomOmladine, with the teamof professionals it employs, the technical capacities at its disposal and its high-quality and diverse programme contents, is a leader among the cultural institutions of Belgrade, but alsomuch further afield.
