Er Srbija » Air Serbia | 5 Reč dobrodošlice Welcomemessage March brings us spring and the beginning of the airline industry’s summer season. Wewill operateflights tothe “WindyCity” three times aweek, onMondays,WednesdaysandSaturdays, and will be gracious hosts for you on our flights. If you’ve already started planning your summer holiday, you’ve likely already heard about Air Serbia’s direct flights that can take you to the Greek islands of Corfu, Crete and Rhodes this summer. They are ideal destinations for all those wishing to “recharge”, but they are no less interesting to those who love active breaks. The large number of cultural and historicalmonumentsonthese islands are impossible to fully explore in just a fewdays, so you’ll probably require another trip. We will be there for you for that too. Then there’s also Turkey. You can reach Istanbul and Ankara via our airline’s scheduled flights, but also Izmir. Near this Mediterranean port city are the ancient Pergamon and Ephesus, which attract tourists from all over the world. While we’re on the topic of historical locations, we also invite you toflywithus to Cairo, where authentic Egyptian landmarks await. Give in to the scent of perfume, papyrus, spices, fish and hookah, the combination of the traditional and the modern, the present and the future. Did just thinking about your summer break take you to warmer places in your mind, as it did for me? Until the summer is officially here, or until we visit a sunny destination, we always have the Europeanmetropolisesthatneversleep.Theywillwelcomeyouwith open arms. Visit our website, click the Destinations section and pick one of the wonderful cities that we fly to from the dropdown menu. Enjoy your flight and have a pleasant trip, jirimarek, CEOAirSerbia Dragi putnici, Dear passengers, Mart 2023. March 2023 Jiri Marek Air Serbia CEO Mart nam donosi proleće i početak letnje sezone u avio-industriji. Deo uspeha dugujemo upravo vama. Hvala na poverenju. Nastavljamo sa unapređivanjem ponude i usluga kako bismo vam pružili još bolje veze i veću udobnost na svim našim letovima. Zimsku sezonu iskoristili smo za planiranje i spremni smo za dalju ekspanziju. U naredna tri meseca pokrenućemo više od 20 direktnih linija u Evropi, Aziji i Africi, a sredinommaja poletećemo i do Čikaga, naše nove destinacije u Severnoj Americi. Do Vetrovitog grada letećemo tri puta nedeljno, ponedeljkom, sredom i subotom. Treba to doživeti. U Portugalu su se ovakvi pločnici pojavili Tipični portugalski trotoari sa šarama od belog i crnog kamenja krase trotoare i javne trgove širom Lisabona The typical pavement patterns of black andwhite stones adorn the pavements and public squares all over Lisbon 16 | Er Srbija » Air Serbia Air Serbia » Er Srbija | 17 Grad u koji ćete se zaljubiti na prvi pogled City that you’ll fall in love with at first sight The Portuguese are known far and wide as warm, sociable and hospitable people, but that story does little to prepare you for just what awaits you in Lisbon. Yes, you will expect to find it pleasant, to perhaps feel at home, but you won’t be prepared for the incredible sense that you’ve already been to this magical city and that you ultimately shouldn’t leave. It’s difficult to describe the experience of walking through the hills of Lisbon, or neighbourhoods that resound with fado music as you chat on every corner with strangers who treat you like a long-lost friend. You have to experience that. That‘s why we’re suggesting some “musts” for your visit to Lisbon, but nothing can replace simply wandering around this unique city... Picture Perfect Lisbon is a very old city. It’s actually the second oldest capital city in Europe, after Athens. The old town centre was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1755, after which it was rebuilt in a classical style, with wide boulevards and mosaic cobblestones. You’ll want to capture all the tiled buildings and colourful, higgledypiggledy neighbourhoods. As the westernmost capital city in Europe, Lisbon enjoys more oko 1500. godine, ali su tek u 19. veku izvedeni na način kako ih danas poznajemo. Nakon zemljotresa koji je uništio veci deo centra Lisabona 1755. godine, grad je morao brzo da se obnovi, a u 19. veku pločice su hours of daylight than any other European city-break destination, ensuring you’ll be able to shoot wonderful photos until late into the evening. Carpet of stones There is so much to see on the streets of Portuguese cities: colourful doors and windows, amazing street art and beautiful tiles, but there is even more to enjoy right beneath your feet! The typical Portuguese pavement patterns of black and white stones that adorn the pavements and public squares all over Lisbon are called ‘calçada portuguesa’. The sensation is almost like walking constantly over a beautiful carpet of stones adorned with floral patterns and waves. This style first appeared in Portugal around the year 1500, but it wasn’t until the 19th century that it was implemented in the way that we’re familiar with today. Tiled façades Lisbon probably has more buildings with tiled façades than any other city in the world. A visit to the National Tile Museum in Lisbon will allow you to see examples of tiles dating from the 15th century to the present day, as you acquaint yourself with this ancient tradition that is far beyond being merely decorative and also has very practical purposes. It was discovered centuries ago that adding tiles to building facades contributed to preserving the interior warmth of homes, whilst also helping delay the spread of flames in the case of a fire. Following the earthquake that destroyed most of Lisbon city centre in 1755, the city’s central core had to be rebuilt quickly. In the 19th century, adding tiles proved to be less expensive than using stone or other sturdy materials. The Foto: depositphotos Foto: depositphotos Foto: Profimedia / Sérgio Nogueira / Alamy

Najbolji fado restorani u Lisabonu nalaze se u dva najstarija kvarta grada - Alfami i Bairo Altu The best fado restaurants are located in Alfama and Bairro Alto, two of Lisbon’s oldest districts 18 | Er Srbija » Air Serbia Air Serbia » Er Srbija | 19 se pokazale jeftinijim od kamena ili drugih čvrstih materijala. Ipak, vremenom su šarene pločice postale suštinski deo estetike i popularne kulture zemlje. Arhitektura i dizajn su zaista mocni, ali dodajte tome i nešto od intruth is that, over time, colourful façade tiles came to represent an intrinsic element of the country’s aesthetics and popular culture. CharmingAlfama You simply cannot leave Lisbon without wandering the lanes of Alfama, the city’s oldest neighbourhood, dotted with crumbling old houses, cobblestone streets, quaint little shops and numerous Fado bars and restaurants. You can easily spend an entire day ambling through the streets of Alfama, picking up knickknacks, sipping cups of coffee and enjoying the splendid views on offer. And, yes, don’t forget to conclude your tour with a Fado evening at one of Alfama’s many Fado bars. TramNo. 28 Lisbon was built on seven steep hills. Be sure to pack comfy shoes and don’t miss out on the chance to experience a trip on one of the antique trams that still rumble happily up the steepest and narrowest streets. These famous, rickety, bright yellow vehicles snake through Lisbon, but Tram No. 28 in particular passes through the extremely scenic neighbourhood of Alfama. Given that it is so popular among tourists, it is also usually packed, even early in the morning. So, if you don’t like standing or jostling around people in a crowded tram, take Tram No. 24, which remains a hidden gem of Lisbon’s public transport. JerónimosMonastery and BelémTower One ‘must’ in Lisbon is setting aside time to tour Belém, Lisbon’s iconic museum district, where the Jerónimos Monastery tops the list. The architecture and designs are so powerful in their own right, but some really intriguing history only adds to the experience. This sight’s proximity to the sea ensured that it was where seafarers stayed before embarking on their journeys. Vasco da Gama even spent his last night in Portugal here prior to embarking on his voyage of discovery to the Orient. You can find his tomb inside. Along with the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower forms part of a UNESCO heritage site. A 16th-century Manueline-styled structure, it was used as a port of embarkation/disembarkation for explorers and served as a lighthouse. It is not difficult to imagine the important role it played in Portugal’s Age of Discovery and Exploration. You can take the narrow, spiral staircase all the way up to the top of Belém Tower. Top secret recipe! You are sure to love the famous Portuguese dessert Pasteis de Nata. If you find yourself in Belém, you simply must taste these delicate custard tarts that have their origins at the Jerónimos Monastery. Originalne tartove probajte u kafeteriji „Pasteis de Belem“, ali imajte na umu da je tamo uvek gužva Try the original tarts at the “Pasteis de Belém” cafeteria, but keep in mind that it’s always crowded 20 | Er Srbija » Air Serbia Air Serbia » Er Srbija | 21 trigantne istorije! Prilično je vetrovito, zato se toplo obucite i poštujte okružena šetališta, uprkos stazama koje su nesmotreni posetioci napravili izvan ograda. stery: Pasteis de Belém café, the owners of which were given the original recipe by the monks. So, when you find yourself biting into your next Pasteis de Nata anywhere else in Portugal, just know that it is merely a Pasteis de Nata, and not the famed Pasteis de Belém! Fadomagic The best fado restaurants in Lisbon are scattered across the city. Still, you’ll find many of them in Alfama and Bairro Alto, two of Lisbon’s oldest and more traditional districts. Don’t worry if you don’t speak Portuguese. The singers draw audiences into their world through emotion. In fado, words catch our attention as they hang in the air with saudade (an emotion that combines nostalgia and melancholy). The menu will include a few different recipes for bacalhau (salted cod), traditional bitoque (thin grilled steak served with French fries, rice, salad and a fried egg), and unique specialities like bochecha de porco (pork cheeks) and alheira (bread and meat sausages). Amazing Sintra One of Portugal’s hidden gems lies just 30 kilometres west of Lisbon: the magical, poetic Sintra. This small town and municipality in the Greater Lisbon area owes its fairy-tale appearance largely to invading Moors, who brought part of their wondrous architecture here. The most picturesque part is the old town (vila velha), which represents a veritable labyrinth of narrow streets bordered by old stone houses, with luxurious bougainvillea flowers hanging over the roofs and painted tile façades. Sintra is also famous for the surrounding area and fantastic castles, such as the Palace of Pena, the National Palace of Sintra, the Quinta da Regaleira, the Palace of Monserrate... Cape Roca 16th-century Portuguese poet Luis de Camões wrote about Cabo da Roca, Cape Roca: “here, where the land ends and the sea begins…” Located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Cape Roca represents the westernmost point of continental Europe. At 150 metres above sea level, the beautiful view provided from this spot is all but impossible to describe in words, especially if you’re fortunate enough to observe sunset here, when rays of yellow, red and orange shimmer across the ocean. The rock faces are steep and the waves are powerful and noisy, while there’s also a lighthouse that first opened in 1772. It is quite windy, so dress warmly and respect the surrounded, demarcated areas that can be visited, despite the paths beyond the face that have been created by more daring visitors. Malo mi to zvuči strašno, a vama? Iako nisam ekspert u tome, Robot-Assisted Surgery deluje sigurnije i pouzdanije negoda lekarmora sve samda radi tokom neke duge operacije.

Founded inMarch 2021 by the Government of Serbia, it today employs more than 40 doctors of science and doctoral students. Headquartered inNovi Sad, the Institute also has offices in Belgrade, Kragujevac andNiš. Speaking for Elevate, Dr Branka Rakić, head of the Institute’s AI in Healthcare and Lifescience research group, says that the Institute targets the further development and education of young people in the field of artificial intelligence, supporting and linking up with industry, and the creation of an ecosystem that will contribute to the further development of artificial intelligence in Serbia. Scientists are divided into several research groups with differing focuses, and the group that’s led by our interlocutor deals with healthcare applications for artificial intelligence. The Institute’s other research groups include: Computer Vision and Remote Sensing; HumanComputer Interface; GreenAI; and Smart Factory. We start by asking Dr Rakić where Serbia stands in the world of artificial intelligence... “According to the Global Innovation Index 2022, Serbia ranks 55th, while our country is the regional leader in terms of innovation performance. The Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia represents the first institute of this type to be established in Southeast Europe and aims to be a link between science and business, in order to contribute to the development of capacities for innovation in Serbia. Similarly, several lessons on the subject of artificial intelligencewere added to the curriculum for seventh and eighth grade high school pupils in 2021, while master’s programmes linked directly to artificial intelligencehave been launched, and that has happened at faculties in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Niš.” Artificial intelligence offers immeasurable possibilities and could change more or less everything we do and the way we live. Where is that most evident? “The possibilities of artificial intelligence really are immeasurable, but I think they’remost evident where we use them on a daily basis, or rather where they ease our lives, and maybe even help. So, for example, we have user experiences in shopping, online searches, various streaming platforms for music or watching films. There where we enjoy the benefits of artificial intelligence, from Google Maps onwards, are probably the most evident possibilities for everyone, though we might not even know that it’s all AI. However, I don’t consider the most beneficial use of artificial intelligence as the one that’s most obvious. The most beneficial uses aren’t the most obvious to us. This is the case, for example, in the field of healthcare, or in production, when it comes to optimising the operations of some factories...” The notion that the economy must be based on knowledge and innovation, and not on manual labour, seems to be becoming increasingly prevalent. Should that concern us? “I think that should make us happy, and not cause us to worry. Humans are thinking beings and what distinguishes us fromanimals is creativity and the ability to contemplate, thus I think that contributes to a better and brighter future for people, who might have fewer physically demanding jobs, and more of those that arementally and creatively challenging.” People are still quite hesitant regarding AI. Is there reason for fear? Could machines replace us? “I think people everywhere are wary of artificial intelligence andwe also commonlyhearworrying statements fromthose dealingwith individual areas of artificial intelligence. I would say that there’s no cause for fear, but there is cause for caution. We have to be cautious with every new technology and every newdiscovery, and to use it responsibly and intelligently.” When talk turns to AI, the issue of ethics is often mentioned. How do you view that; where are the boundaries, if indeed there are any? “Ethics guidelines are extremely useful and I don’t think ethics should be left down to the individual, and nor should the selection of ethical boundaries, rather that must be regulated. And ethics in AI is regulated by an act on the responsible and trustworthy application of artificial intelligence at the European level, and we also have a draft of just such an act for Serbia. We can discuss the boundaries and whether they exist, but it’s certain that not even ten people would agree if they were gathered in one room. The boundaries will therefore be set in the form of a single law, order, and act, and writing those guidelines should include the participation of not only experts in the field of artificial intelligence, but also experts in the fields of various humanities, law and others.” AI has perhaps the most applications in medicine. One of my friends in New York was operated on by a robot. That sounds a bit scary to me, what do you think? “Forme, the application of artificial intelligence inmedicine is very important. I know that Robot-Assisted Surgery exists, where a robot assists a doctor with an operation, and I find that very comforting, not scary, because a human hand can never be as stable or precise as a robotic hand. If operations are performed in this way, they are less invasive and much more precise. Although I’m not an expert in it, Robot-Assisted Surgery seems safer and more reliable than a doctor having to do everything by themselves during some very lengthy operation.” There’s nevertheless something truly scary in the notion that machines could “take over”, like in The Terminator or The Matrix. Fiction aside, could that which remains in the realm of science fiction today become some distant future reality? “The idea that machines will take over is indeed terrifying, of course it is! As I’ma big fan of sci-fi and I loveThe Terminator, I’ve seen some things in the field of biotech that were sci-fi and are now reality. However, nothing is happening yet even though there’s talkof howthey will clone us, howsomeonewill take our DNA and make identical replicas. That still hasn’t happened despite being spoken about for more than 30 years, and it won’t happen, and nor is science even heading in that direction, because it’s actually heading in the direction of extending human life. I’mentertained byTheMatrix andThe Terminator, and perhaps what scares me hypothetically is howwewill prepare our children for such a future. I think we need to teach them to be much more flexible than we were, never mind our parents. The occupations that exist today won’t exist in ten or twenty years, and now I can’t even predict what those occupations of the future will be. Our youngsters have to be open-minded, to learn constantly and adapt to a new market.” I asked ChatGPT who he is. He said that he’s software, artificial intelligence, without physical existence and without personal feelings or consciousness. How far are we from the possibility of developing consciousness or emotions? “I think themain question here is defining consciousness and emotions, and it seems tome that those are extremely philosophical questions. That’s the same aswhen I was asked a questionwhen I was dealing with biotechnology, and that was whether we can make life and let’s define life. What does itmean to be a living organism? If I’m capable of creating a synthetic cell, have I created life? Those are all philosophical questions that, it seems to me, are beyond the realm of science, and I would leave it to the philosophers and theologians, who have a greater capacity to contemplate in that direction.” Have you chatted with ChatGPT; how does it seem to you? “I have, of course. Who hasn’t chatted with ChatGPT? I also find that kind of chatting fun. I asked him questions like those trivial ones, towriteme a compositionor a song, to somemore serious things, such as answering some complex scientific questions. I must admit that I sometimes evenuse it instead of Google or Wikipedia.”
