R I TAM SRBI JE / RHYTHM OF SERBIA 82 | Rimski tragovi » Tracks of Rome Feliks Romulijana Gamzigrad predstavlja rezidenciju rimskog cara Gaja Valerija Maksimijana Galerija, zeta Dioklecijanovog. FELIXROMULIANA Gamzigrad represents the residence of Roman emperor Gaius Galerius ValeriusMaximianus, the son-in-lawof Diocletian. He is believed to have named it Romuliana after hismother, Romula. The palace appears to have never been completed, with the emperors of the 4th century having given the magnificent estate to theChristian church. The palacewas destroyed by barbarians during the 5th century, only to be rebuilt in the 6th century by Justinian I, in the formof a frontier fortress. This former imperial residencewas abandoned following the invasion of the Slavs at the end of the 6th century. Galerius built his imperial palace in the picturesque valley of the Black River, among lowhills, andGamzigrad is perhaps the most attractivemonument to ancient times that is preserved in Serbia. Visitors to its ruins can uncover, in equal measure, the power and luxury of ancient Rome, but also its artistic sophistication andway of life. Galerius’s vision of Romulianawas based on the example of Diocletian’s Palace in Split. The luxurious palaces of Romuliana, decoratedwith extraordinary mosaics, frescoes and precious sculptures, represented the pinnacle of the art of that time.
