It is unofficially called the Gate of the Caucasus and the southern capital of Russia, and here, like nowhere else in the country, there is a strong tradition of the Don Cossacks – a military class known since the mid-16th century. The city continuously hosts various thematic activities dedicated to Cossacks. For example, there are war games in which the Don Cossacks compete in horseback riding, handling weapons, showing their courage... One must-see place is the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin – a miniature copy of Moscow’s Church of Christ the Saviour. It is the third church erected on the same site: the first burned down following a lightning strike, while the second collapsed. The cathedral was closed during the Soviet era, but was rebuilt very quickly, only to again, in 1999, receive a four-bell tower to replace the one destroyed during the war. Famous writer and Nobel laureate Mikhail Sholokhov, author of the masterpiece And Quiet Flows the Don, was born in the vicinity of the city, while Rostov was also home to Sergei Yesenin and Alexandr Solzhenitsyn, who spent his student days there. Nezvanično se naziva kapijom Kavkaza i južnom prestonicom Rusije, a tamo kao nigde u zemlji postoji jaka tradicija donskih kozaka – vojne klase poznate od sredine 16. veka. U gradu se stalno održavaju različite tematske aktivnosti posvećene kozacima. Na primer, vojne igre, na kojima se donski kozaci takmiče u jahanju, rukovanju oružjem, pokazuju hrabrost... Mesto koje obavezno treba da posetite je Hram rođenja Presvete Bogorodice — minijaturna kopija Hrama Hrista Spasitelјa u Moskvi. To je treća crkva podignuta na istom mestu: prvu je spalio grom, druga je oronula. Hram je bio zatvoren tokom sovjetske ere, ali je vrlo brzo obnovljen, da bi 1999. ponovo dobio i četvorostruki zvonik uništen tokom rata.
