Cathedral The beautiful Gothic Cathedral of the Virgin Mary is a symbol of the city and one of its main attractions. It stands on a site once occupied by a temple of the Roman goddess of the hunt Diana, which the Romans erected in her honour, and a later replaced with a mosque. It was in the 13th century that the Spaniards demolished the mosque and laid the foundations of today’s cathedral. That was in 1262, but construction lasted 94 years, while the cathedral was rebuilt several times over the following few hundred years.
