With a peak at 254 metres above sea level, the forest on Zvezdara Hill dominates the eastern part of Belgrade and overlooks the right bank of the Danube. Forestation of the hill began in 1933, following construction of the Astronomical Observatory, after which the entire area was renamed – with the colloquial term for an observatory being ‘zvezdarnica’ or ‘zvezdara’ [zvezda means star]. A total of 145 hectares were forested, with 21 hectares arranged into a park that’s visited by Belgraders seeking relaxation and recreation. Zvezdara is poorly explored as an archaeological site, while the forest contains two scienti c centres: the Mihajlo Pupin Institute and the Zvezdara Science and Technology Park.
