During this month that’s bathed in sunlight, the sound of waves grows louder, enhancing the mood for travel even more. The bikini and the sea are inseparable, just like July and summer. Želimo da u ovoj godini prevezemo više od tri i po miliona putnika, kaže Jirži Marek, generalni direktor Er Srbije We want to carry more than three and a half million passengers this year, says Air Serbia CEO Jiri Marek U fokusu In focus 14 | Er Srbija » Air Serbia OD POČE TKA GOD I NE S I NCE T HE B EG I NN I NG OF T HE Y EAR INTHE PRE PANDEMICYEAROF 2019, the national airline had carried the same number of passengers by 5b August, while in 2022 the same result was only achieved on 13th August. This is thus the first year since it began operating under the Air Serbia name that the airline has carried 1.5million passengers by June, or twomonths earlier than in its previous best business year. “Passengers recognise our desire to continuously expand the network of destinations we fly to and to improve the quality of service. Thanks to the trust they place in us every day, we are achieving record resultsmonth after month in terms of the number of flights and passengers carried. At the very beginning of 2023, we set a clear goal and created a strategy that should enable us to achieve what we planned. Wewant to carrymore than three and a half million passengers this year, and if we continuewith such goodmonthly results, I believewewill achieve that goal,” says Air SerbiaCEO Jiri Marek. When it comes to the total number of passengers carried annually, the Serbian flag carrier’s flights carried 2.81 million passengers in 2019, while in 2022 it transported 2.76million passengers. During this year, the national airline had already carried itsmillionth passenger by 8th May, despite having last year only achieved this same result on 8th July, or twomonths later. Air Serbia operates flights to over 80destinations worldwide. In addition to itsmain BelgradeNikola Tesla Airport hub, passengers can also fly to their destinations from Niš Constantine theGreat Airport andMorava International Airport near Kraljevo. MILION I PO PUTNIKA NA LETOVIMA ER SRBIJE 1.5 MILLION PASSENGERS ON AIR SERBIA’S FLIGHTS Do 18. juna, u redovnom i čarter-saobraćaju, nacionalna avio-kompanija prevezla jemilion i po putnika i oborila još jedan sopstveni rekord / The Serbian national airline had carried 1.5million passengers on scheduled and charter flights this year by 18th June, thus breaking another of its records U PRETPANDEMIJSKOJ 2019.

“EVERY FLIGHT IS BEAUTIFUL AND SPECIAL IN AND OF ITSELF. I say every flight, because I love aeroplanes and airports and travelling. I enjoy that sense of slight excitement prior to take-off, because I know that I’mthus already closer tomy destination. I have two flights ahead of me in the next month and I can admit to you that I’malready looking forward to themhappily. It is interesting that, on almost every flight, I fall asleep about ten minutes before we land at the airport. But I manage to sleep at least a little because I don’t leap from my seat immediately. Just enough until the other passengers exit the plane, so I’m often the last to disembark.” What do you always carry with you aboard a plane? “An obligatory item are headphones, because I always listen to music during flights, most commonly soul and funk rhythms to relax me, particularly if it’s a longer flight. If the flight is shorter, I spend the time chatting with a fellow traveller.” WHO IS IVAN? Prior to demonstrating his talent for acting, he trained judo in his hometown of Zrenjanin, and it was this sport that inspired fellow actor Viktor Savić to give him his nickname [Džudi/Judy]. He won the Zoranov Brk Award for his portrayal of the character of Don Juan in the play of the same name. He has shared scenes with many great actors, including the likes of Ralph Fiennes, and before flying off for his well-deserved summer break this year, he concluded shooting for the film Tavern in the Balkans, the premiere of which has been scheduled for 3rd November. He is awaited by new characters from September onwards, amongst which he is especially looking forward to the series Son’s Will. Kažem svaki, jer volim i avione i aerodrome i putovanja.

Takvi su i čelnici grada koji nas dočekuju na jednom sasvim posebnom mestu, u kafeu „Kipos“, što na grčkom znaCrete has always been that distant, faraway island, with its shores lapped by the Mediterranean on all sides, halfway between Malta and Cyprus, somewhere between Athens and Alexandria. It always tops the list of desired summer destinations, a place that you simply must visit sooner or later. This cradle of the Minoan civilisation, with its legacy of the Venetian and Ottoman empires, the home of the Greek Zorba... Even the Greeks consider Crete as being the island that is “perhaps the most beautiful”, and it is so large that you will find a beach for everyone, though you won’t really be able to spend your summer holiday at both ends of the island. The only thing is that Crete is no longer a distant, faraway destination, as it recently became available via an Air Serbia flight lasting less than two hours. If you are heading to the west of the island, choose Chania, while you can also fly a little further north and east to Heraklion. Both cities now have direct connections with Belgrade, but for this trip, marking our first encounter with this beauty of the Mediterranean, we chose the island’s queen, as Chania is often dubbed... Firstmeeting in the “Garden” Greece is undeniably beautiful in myriad ways, but it is certainly the Greek people that make it special. Charming, forthright, attentive yet unobtrusive, there for you if you need them, but also ready to make themselves scarce. These characteristics also describe the leaders of the city, who welcomed us in a very special place, Café Kipos, which means “garden” in Greek and is situated in the city’s municipal garden. This historic café has been operating for more than 150 years, making it one of the oldest in Europe, and over the decades it has served coffee to all the important people who’ve ever come here, testifying to which are numerous photos on the walls. 22 | Er Srbija » Air Serbia ke Eleftherios Venizelos, Maria Callas, Mikis Theodorakis, Aristotle Onassis and many more... And we also found ourselves there, sitting under a huge weeping fig tree, slowly coming to the realisation that we were in Greece. We all order Freddo cappuccinos, which the Greeks claim to have invented. I don’t know if that claim’s accurate, but I do know that there’s no better coffee! Iced espresso with thick cream, followed by a pie filled with Cretan cheese and topped with honey, then a Greek bougatsa custard pie, accompanied by the intoxicating scent of the sea… Everything is there, loudly declaring a greeting: welcome to Greece! Full cup of history What probably distinguishes Chania from its sister cities on other islands to a large extent is the impression that you’ve actually arrived in some Italian city, because the Venetians also attempted to leave an indelible mark here. Ever since the construction of the Minoan polis of Kydonia on the site of modern-day Chania, this Greek city that has existed for 4,000 years has been assaulted and occupied by Romans, Arabs, Venetians and Ottomans, all of whom left reminders of their presence and thus created this či „bašta“, u opštinskoj bašti grada. Ljudi poput Venizelosa, Marije Kalas, Mikisa Teodorakisa, Onazisa...

Allow the streets themselves to guide you, enjoy the colourful handicraft items and souvenirs, chat with traders and don’t worry about getting lost. That’s because heading downhill will definitely result in you reaching the sea and the Venetian harbour, which represents the city’s main promenade, where everything bustles with different aromas and tastes, various languages and endlessly happy tourists. The best place to start your walking tour is the impressive Firkas Fortress, the purpose of which has changed many times throughout its long history and which today houses the Maritime Museum of Crete. Ako budete imali sreće, dok sunce tone u more, na tom zidu ćete možda videti mladiće i devojke u izvornim nošnjama kako igraju tradicionalne kritske plesove. Festivali su ovde svakodnevna stvar, uhvatićete bar neki zabavni program. If you’re lucky, you might see young men and women in authentic local costumes dancing traditional Cretan dances on that wall as the sun sinks into the sea. Festivals are an everyday occurrence here and you’re bound to catch at least some entertainment programme. Next you will amble past the Bastion of St. Nicholas of Molos, representing the bulwark that once protected the harbour against pirates, and head all the way to the Egyptian lighthouse, which is a symbol of this vibrant city. At the end of your walk, the most difficult part might be choosing a restaurant or café (there are really a lot) where you can unwind and watch the world go by under the sizzling Cretan sun. WhereVenizelos guards the city You will, of course, constantly return to the Old Town, because that’s where the best fun is to be found, but don’t be too idle to make the effort to clamber up to the top of the hills of Akrono plavetnilo Kritskog mora.

Air Serbia » Er Srbija | 25 tiri for an unforgettable panoramic view of the whole of Chania and the endless blue of the sea of the Cretan coast. The park here is stunningly beautiful and somewhat reminiscent of Belgrade’s Avala, if you exclude the palm trees and oleander shrubs, and in this important place you can also pay your respects to Eleftherios Venizelos, the most renowned Cretan, who determined the developmental direction of the Greek state and paved the way for modern democracy, and whose tomb is located there. The memorial statue of Spyros Kagiales, the hero of the 1897 rebellion, who bravely used his body to replace a broken flagpole and ensure the Greek flag remained aloft, will remind you of the slogan “freedomor death” which is a slightly different version of the slogan we remember in Serbia: ‘better the grave than a slave’. Big blue and sirtaki And now the time has come to head towards the main reason we came here: the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean and some of Greece’s most beautiful beaches. And the choice is seemingly endless – depending only on how far you want to go and what you need. We only paddled in a few places, but that was quite enough for us to want you to swim here yourself. For starters there’s Phalasarna, which has been declared one of Europe’s best beaches and among the most beautiful in the world. Soft, white sand, turquoise water, parasols, sunbeds, drinks, and everything else you need to spend an unforgettable day here. If you don’t want to travel the 60 kilometres required to get there, you will find the wild landscape of Sheitan [Satan] Ports just 22 km from Chania. Located there are three narrow inlets that are well protected against the waves. Or are they? This natural beauty spot earned its devilish name because the narrow passage through the rocks seems gentle and calm, but the sudden and unexpected wind has been known to smash ships against those same rocks. That’s why the Ottomans who discovered these bays named the place after Satan himself, Satanas, as the Greeks call this place, or as we Serbs would say, after the black devil. But the only thing we saw here was devilishly beautiful nature and the cleanest deep sea. You can only reach this beach by car, and only as far as the carpark – after which you have to descend the steep path on foot – or, if you’re as fortunate as we were, by boat. We dropped anchor, leapt from the deck and had the best possible time swimming in the clear waters. If you have time, head to Stavros Beach, which is just 15 kilometres from Chania. The name probably doesn't mean much to you right now, but that might change if we tell you that it was there that the sirtaki dance was performed for the first time! It was way back in 1964 that Anthony Quinn was given this dance to perform, on the sand of Stavros Beach, to the famous music of Mikis Theodorakis. Sirtaki was celebrated after the film Zorba the Greek won three Oscars, and many believe it is a traditional Greek dance, though it was actually created for the needs of the film. However, the dance and mnogo.

26 | Er Srbija » Air Serbia the film also brought glory to this beach with mountains providing the backdrop, which you should definitely visit even if you’re too young to have ever even heard of this classic film. And finally, there are options that you don’t have to travel far from Chania to experience. Close to the city is a landscaped sand beach that passes through places like Agia Marina and the village of Platanias, and extends further along the coast, which you can traverse until you find a spot under the sun that’s just to your liking. A must if you are in Agia Marina is the seafront Akti Restaurant, where you will encounter a magical atmosphere and eat the best Greek specialities, served in large portions and at reasonable prices! Monasticwine and olives Apart from everything we’re already mentioned, Chania is also famous for its fragrant, extra virgin olive oil, wines, oranges and avocados. As you head to the beaches, enjoy the fields that you pass or pay a visit to the beautiful Agia Triada Monastery, which was built in the Byzantine style in the 17th century and is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Nearby is also the world’s oldest olive tree, which is said to be three to five thousand years old.. Breathe slowly in Rethymno And last, but by no means least, explore one of Greece’s best-preserved medieval towns and experience your own fairytale romance in Rethymno. This small town combines the charm and history of the old town with a long sand beach. Despite being Crete’s third largest city, Rethymno never pretends to be like Chania or Heraklion. It instead retains its own provincial air. This is a place where life moves slowly, creating an almost romantic backdrop to everyday life. You will enjoy timeless attractions and varied landscapes, architecture, museums, archaeological sites, endless sand beaches and picturesque surrounding villages. Rethymno is the only settlement on Crete to have been built on a cape, or rather “on the boundary between calmness and fierceness”, as local writer Pantelis Prevelakis described this place. Check it out for yourself... te ili ih obiđite kod prelepog manastira Aja Trijada, podignutog u 17. veku u vizantijskom stilu, okruženom vinogradima i maslinjacima. Uživaćete u bezvremenim atrakcijama i raznolikim pejzažima, arhitekturi, muzejima, arheološkim nalazištima, beskrajnim peščanim plažama i živopisnim obližnjim selima. Izložba „The Past in The Present“ biće otvorena do 17. septembra 2023, a kako nalaže praksa Galerije „Hestia“, imaće i svoje prateće programe. The exhibition entitled The Past in The Present intertwines the works of two artists who belong to the kindred civilisational and religious circles of Greece and Serbia, though they both differ not only in terms of the perspective fromwhich they approach themes, but also in the fact that they deal with different types of photography. What nonetheless connects them is their interest in tradition, the result of which is long-term research projects. The Ethos and Mitos projects of Greek photographer Michalis Pappas bring photographs focused on Greece’s folklore tradition, on folk rituals, religious customs and folk costumes from various regions of the country. Unlike Pappas’s theatrical photography - with its bright colour palette and almost Dionysian characteristics, in which people represent the main protagonists – Mihailo Vasiljević, in his Serbian Mythology project, approaches Serbian mythology and tradition from a completely different perspective. Despite the fact that his works are also created through his travels to specific destinations within Serbia and that they also deal with a combination of rituals with pagan and Christian origins, his photographs have a much softer colour palette and feature everyday items, landscapes and natural phenomena, while they do not accentuate décor and staging. The Past in The Present exhibition runs until 17th September 2023 and will also have its own ancillary programmes, as is the common practice of Hestia Gallery. Srećom, pomalo sam i sanjar. Kako ste osnovali „FootPrint Coalition“? Umiruju me i donose utehu.
