Oni koji se sećaju Andrićevih novljanskih da- “When I sit in front of the house, as I have in front of me a view that looks as though it was chosen by some lover of natural beauty, and not pure coincidence, I see the wide mouth of Boka and the sharp edge of the sea continuously along its length…” So wrote Ivo Andrić describing the view offered by the only house that he had built, which was constructed in the immediate vicinity of Njegoš’s school, in Njegoševa Street, surrounded by the name of the bishop whose verse was part of his every day. About the view that extended all the way to Lovćen on clear days… At the time of his greatest fame, after hewas awarded the 1961Nobel Prize for Literature, Andrić found in Herceg Novi “ambience that refines an idea, sharpens a thought and strengthens noble intention,” wrote Dr Vladimir Roganović, among others, in his book Andrić in Herceg Novi. After his 1958 marriage to his one and only love,MilicaBabić, he started coming toHercegNovi for his holidays, staying at the Hotel Boka every year. He fell in love with this city, which he claimed stripped him of his power of writing, because it is so beautiful that he could find nothing to add or take away, so it was there that he built a home for himself and Milica. He nonetheless completed his book Signs by the Roadside while living there… Herehe socialisedwithwriters, painters, artists and ANDRIĆ: Čudesni izlog odnedogledne pučine ANDRIĆ: wonderful windowdisplay of endless seas Zaljubio se u Herceg Novi, za koji je tvrdio da mu oduzima moć pisanja. „Toliko je lep da mu se ništa ne može dodati i oduzeti“ He fell in love with this city, which he claimed stripped him of his power of writing. “It is so beautiful that I could find nothing to add or take away”
