Eastern Serbia » Istočna Srbija » | 95 LAZAR’S CANYON Cut into thick limestone rocks under the mountain of Malinik, covering a distance of nine kilometres of vertical, wild cliffs, complete with numerous fissures and caves, this area represents Eastern Serbia’s longest and deepest canyon. Only three to four metres wide in its narrowest part, it reaches depths of as much as 500 metres. In certain places, the river passes between natural stone blocks that have been wedged together to form natural bridges. The territory encompassed by the natural monument of Lazar’s Canyon is characterised by a wealth of exceptional natural treasures: a network of limestone canyon valleys of impressive dimensions and distinct morphological forms; numerous significant speleological objects (more than 70 caves and pits); rich flora and fauna etc. KRUPAJa SPRING According to legend, the Homolje Mountains are home to a treasure that’s located at the bottom of a golden cave that the locals of this area still search for tirelessly. This claim could be up for debate, but there’s no debate when it comes to defining the real treasure of this area: the Krupaj Spring, which represents a truly exotic scene with its fluctuating hues of green and blue. Krupaja Spring is a unique natural oasis that will give you the impression that you are in “Thailand in the middle of Serbia”, wrapped in the embrace of the Beljanica, Kučaj and Homolje mountains. The water’s turquoise colour, the mass of greenery and tall trees around the spring, along with the cave fromwhich water constantly emerges to fill the karst lake, but also the complete ambience of this place, give the impression of observing a scene from a postcard that you’ve just received from some exotic journey.
