Eastern Serbia » Istočna Srbija » | 93 To date, a total of 12 natural monuments have already been protected on the area of the future national park, as well as three strict nature reserves - Vinatovača, Resava Gorge and Busovača – and one area of outstanding natural beauty. A special treasure of this area is represented by its caves and other speleological objects, a total of 150 of them, the most famous of which are the Velika Atula, Radoševa and Zlotska caves. The entire area is home to ancient relict plant species, such as English yew, common ivy and lilac, while it provides the natural habitat for a fifth of our country’s total flora. Also growing here is Ramonda serbica, the Serbian phoenix flower, which in Serbia is worn on the lapel to commemorate Armistice Day marking the end of WorldWar I. The Kučaj-Beljanica mountain massif is also home to 23 per cent of the country’s reptilian fauna, 130 species of bird and 70 per cent of total mammalian fauna. They include lynx, otter, brown bear and wolf, which are listed as endangered vertebrates in Serbia. The region encompassed by this new national park is also rich in cultural and historical heritage, dating back to prehistoric times. The oldest traces of human settlements in this area have been discovered in the vicinity of Despotovac, while a settlement also existed in the Zlotska Cave, where jewellery, tools and weapons were created and which was inhabited from the fourth millennium to the seventh century BC. The monasteries of Manasija and Ravanica are also located here… Osim kulturnog i istorijskog značaja, skladne arhitekture harmoničnih linija i ostataka monumentalnog utvrđenja, ono što Manasiju svrstava u vrh srednjovekovnih dragulja jeste njen živopis. Iako je sačuvana tek trećina fresaka, živopis Manasije spada u red najvećih dometa srednjovekovnog slikarstva. Danas ženski manastir, čije je sestrinstvo posvećeno molitvi i očuvanju manastirskog kompleksa i života u njemu, Manasija i dalje predstavlja svedočanstvo o neobično živoj umetničkoj i kulturnoj aktivnosti u Srbiji s početka 15. veka. MANASIJAMONASTERY Isolated in tranquil serenity, in the picturesque gorge of the river Resava, close to the town of Despotovac, stands Manasija Monastery, which has attracted the attention of travel writers for centuries with its magnificent temple and strong fortifications. This is one of the most important monuments of Serbia’s medieval culture and the most important structure belonging to the style of the so-called Morava School of architecture. The monastery was founded by Despot Stefan Lazarević, and analysis has shown that his mortal remains are buried in the southern part of the church, under a white marble slab. Apart from its cultural and historical importance, balanced architecture of harmonious lines and the remains of a monumental fortress, Manasija ranks among the top jewels of the medieval period thanks to its painted walls. Despite only a third of this monastery’s frescoes having been preserved, Manasija’s painted works are classed among the greatest achievements of medieval church painting. Today functioning as a convent, with a sisterhood that’s dedicated wholeheartedly to prayer and the preservation of the monastery complex and life within it, Manasija continues to stand as testimony to the unusually lively artistic and cultural activities that took place in the Serbia of the early 15th century.
