| 61 5 CHATEAU DE CHILLON On the shore of Lake Geneva, in the vicinity of Montreux, the famous Chillon Castle has for centuries inspired artists and writers. Lord Byron, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Victor Hugo are among the greats who’ve written about this architectural treasure. Once a fortress of the counts and dukes of Savoy dating back to the 12th century, the complex consists of around 25 buildings, with agrarian sights including the Great Hall, with a magni cent view of Lake Geneva, Gothic underground rooms, a chapel adorned with 14th century paintings; and the bedroom of the duke of Savoy, decorated with medieval murals. The city of Geneva is located between snow-covered peaks and the spot where the River Rhône empties into the lake. This “city of peace” that speaks French is the European Headquarters of the United Nations and exudes a pleasant fusion of French Joie de Vivre and Swiss structure. Walkways, parks and gardens surround the lake, while the old town is a beautiful area for strolling among historic buildings. Also on the lake, about 62 kilometres from Geneva, Lausanne offers wonderful views of the surrounding region and the Alps in the distance.
