AntonioGaudí, thewonderful Spanish architect, gave his stamp to his own Barcelona. Decades after his death, that stamp still bringsmillions of tourists to his city, where they don’t knowwhat tomarvel at rst – his cathedral, Güell Park, casaMilá or casa Batlló... The centenary of the death of Gaudí will pass, and hismasterpiece – the one that he dedicated half of his life to –will nally be completed. The Basilica i Temple de la Sagrada Familia (Basilica and Exiatory Church of the Holy Family) will be completed in 2026. Gaudí began building this church in 1883, at the age of 31. Hemaintained his optimismabout the certainty that the project would be completed. However, nancial crises and wars slowed thework signi cantly. In his old age, he abandoned all worldlyworks and devoted himself fully to his faith and the construction of the church. In the last 12 years of his life, he evenmade a small studio for himself on the construction site, where he stayed almost around the clock. Every detail of this temple of theHoly Family exudes Christian symbolism, becauseGaudí’s intentionwas for this church to represent“the last great sanctuary of Christianity”. This architect didn’tmanage to complete his great temple. Hewas hit by a tramon 12th June 1926. Thewhole of Barcelona sent him on his way and paid their nal respects. The government ordered that he be buried in the crypt of his own church, where he rests alongside themasterpiece of his life. THEUNREALBARCELONAOFGAUDÍ iStock / TomasSereda iStock / Ihor_Tailwind
