Er Srbija » Air Serbia | 9 Reč dobrodošlice Welcomemessage One of the favourite months for many people – August, when warm colours and summer energy reach their peak – has now arrived. August is the ideal month for summer holidays, enjoying yourself by the sea and having a good read. Statistics show that people tend to read the most during their summer holidays. Did you know that many countries celebrate Book Lovers Day on 9th August? Watermelon Day is also celebrated in August, which makes perfect sense considering that watermelons are among the best summer treats. We have dedicated this edition of Elevate to the magnificent Adriatic coast. One popular Belgrade musician wrote a verse that perhaps best describes all our Adriatic destinations. The song goes like this: “I’ll take you to a remote place, between mountains and the sea”, and we would encourage you to take advantage of our direct flights to Tivat, Dubrovnik, Split, Rijeka, Zadar and Pula, allowing you to quickly and comfortably reach the Adriatic coast. Italy also has a coastline on the Adriatic. Have you ever visited Venice or Bari? Venice needs no introduction, with everything probably having already been said or written about this city, so we can only recommend it as an ever-attractive destination. We believe that Bari is a gem of the Adriatic coast that you simply must explore. We have flights to Bari three times a week, every Monday, Thursday and Sunday, which makes it an ideal destination for an extended weekend break. In addition to our scheduled and seasonal destinations, the details of which are available towards the end of the magazine, we also provide charter flights during the summer season, in partnership with travel agents. From April to October, we fly to some of your favourite holiday resorts in Turkey, Tunisia, Egypt and Greece. This year, we also launched flights for the first time to Marsa Matruh, a popular resort in Egypt. Unlike Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh, both of which are located on the Red Sea, Marsa Matruh is located on the Mediterranean coast and is just 300 kilometres from the beautiful Alexandria. Whether you want to explore new cities that you’ve never been to before or to visit one of your most beloved destinations, it will be our pleasure to be part of your travels. Air Serbia is by your side year-round. Enjoy your flight and have a nice trip, Jiří Marek, CEO AirSerbia Dragi putnici, Dear passengers, Avgust 2023. August 2023 Jirži Marek Air Serbia CEO Stigli smodomnogimaomiljenog letnjeg meseca – avgusta, kad su tople boje i energija leta na vrhuncu. Taj mesec je idealan za odmor, uživanje uz more i dobru knjigu. Italija jednim svojim delom takođe izlazi na Jadransko more. Uživajte u letu i srećan put. Jirži Marek, Generalni direktor Er Srbija

“I travel plenty. I’m on a plane at least three times a week and I can admit that I’ve become addicted to flying. I love that feeling, it holds special joy for me. I adore travelling, and the best and fastest way to transport yourself from place to place is by plane. Of course, it’s always the most beautiful experience aboard the planes of our own airline…” What do you always carry with you on a flight? “I never board a plane without a book and cosmetics. If it’s a longer flight, I also carry my iPad so I can watch some film. I always use the time I spend on a plane well by planning everything that I want to do. And sometimes I simply get a good rest.” Who isMarija She completed the faculty of law and launched her career in music in 2015, at the National Theatre. 24 | Er Srbija » Air Serbia Foto:Depositphotos / Multipedia Çanakkale is located at the entrance of the Dardanelles Strait, which connects the Aegean and Marmara seas. It is a place that has welcomed leaders, commanders, warriors, artists, philosophers, explorers, and poets. The lands of the legendary Trojan War and Dardanelles Campaign are located on both sides of the Dardanelles Strait, which would much later divide the city of Istanbul to form a city that separates Europe and Asia. Troy is thought to have been located at the edge of the bay where the rivers Karamenderes and Dümrek reach the Aegean. The city, which was destroyed by wars and natural disasters, gradually lost its importance and was finally abandoned. Troy Museum today welcomes visitors at the entrance to the Ancient City of Troy, which was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List back in 1998. The museum depicts and explains the life and archaeological history of Troy and its cultures through artefacts recovered during excavations. Çanakkale is also famous worldwide for the battle that took place here following the outbreak of World War I. The Allied fleet’s attempt to force passage through the Dardanelles in February 1915 failed and was followed by an amphibious landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula in April 1915. The objective was to conquer Istanbul (then still known as Constantinople), but the Turkish Army, under the leadership of then commander Kemal Atatürk, managed to hold off the land offensive and the allies were forced to withdraw in January 1916, after eight months of heavy fighting. The battlefields are now occupied by a national park containing numerous monuments that were registered on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2014. Assos The ancient Greek coastal town of Assos is another site in Çanakkale province to be included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and it is perhaps one of the most scenic ancient cities in modern Türkiye. It is situated on a rocky hill some 17 kilometres south of the district of Ayvacık. Aristotle arrived in Assos in 348 BC and established a philosophical school where he taught for three years. The acropolis hosts the earliest Doric temple in Anatolia, a Temple of Athena, fortification walls and a Turkish mosque from the early period. You can follow the path leading to the lower city and visit the agora, the gymnasium, and enjoy great views of Lesbos from the theatre. With its beautiful nature and ancient ruins, Assos is a regular backdrop used for filming Turkish TV series, while it is an alluring spot for divers thanks to its clean seas and rich underwater world. Bozcaada Located near Çanakkale, at the mouth of the Dardanelles Straits, Bozcaada is Türkiye’s third largest island, covering an area of 40 square kilometres. Upon arrival on the island, you are greeted by the castle overlooking the harbour. You can wander its narrow streets between beautiful and colourful houses, then head to the Çiçek Patisserie for some Kavala cookies, one of the famous delicacies of the island, or to try ice cream flavoured with the famous local fragrant lavender. If you’re there at sunset, head to the Polente Lighthouse to enjoy some wonderful views. Wine seems as plentiful as water on this island and a tour reveals many vineyards and wine cellars. There are good sand beaches at Ayazma, Poyraz and İğdelik, while jazz lovers will enjoy September’s annual festival. serijama, a takođe je pogodno mesto za ronioce zbog čistog mora i bogatog podvodnog sveta.

26 | Er Srbija » Air Serbia Balıkesir is an important tourist destination that boasts coasts on both the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea, a place of unique bays, islets, mountains and hot springs. It is a city that fuses culture, history and nature, with a vision and role that are expanding constantly. A haven of Turkish academicism, it has two universities and incredible architecture to rival its stunning nature. Being located between two seas ensures it is the perfect spot for lovers of freshly caught fish. It also has more than a hundred forests, making it a great spot to fill your lungs to the max. Rich in hot springs, local residents produce over 50 types of cheese here, while rugs and fabrics form just part of its vast cultural heritage. If you are traversing the Gulf of Izmit by car, be sure to pass through Mount Kaz, or Mount Ida (Kaz Dagları), but there are also other mustsee sites in the area. Ayvalık Ayvalık is famous for its excellent diving, delightful beaches, expansive national parks and stunning architecture. Here you can visit Şeytan Sofrası (the Devil’s Feast) and enjoy marvellous sunsets. It is recommended to try “papalina” fish while you’re on Cunda Island, but also its famous toasted sandwiches “Ayvalık Tostu”. It is impossible to imagine Ayvalık without its sanctuaries, but also without its beaches. The most notable is Sarımsaklı Beach, which is renowned for its dry sand that doesn’t stick to the body. Beach bars and seafront restaurants serving local cuisine enable visitors to take a nice break from the sea and sun. With 22 islands, 60 diving spots and rich underwater fauna and flora, Ayvalık is a true diver’s paradise. The "red coral" that can be seen in 34 diving spots along the Ayvalık coast is enchanting. With optimal climatic conditions and favourable winds and waves, Ayvalık is also a very popular destination for windsurfers and sailors. Cunda Island Cunda Island, also known as Alibey Island (Alibey Adası), is situated just off the coast of Ayvalık between Çanakkale and İzmir on the north coast of the Aegean. A road bridge connects the island to the mainland, while its Anatolian Greek architecture – with old houses and narrow streets – is particularly interesting. Apart from enjoying the sea and sand, other things to do on Cunda include visiting the Lovers’ Hill for its amazing views, visiting the Panagia Church and Library. This island is also famous for its glorious sunsets, delicious seafood and taverns where the conversation invariably continues into the early hours of the morning. Mora i ja semnogo razlikujemo.

(smeh). Prepoznale suto jednaudrugoj i to ovu seriju čini posebnom. – Sve. (smeh). Osim toga što smo obe žene, nemamnijednu zajedničku tačku s njom. Loša sam u logici i matematici, karakterno smo potpuno različite. Sasha a l exande r , act r ess I speak Serbian often, nurturing thememory of my roots Did you know that behind her alias is the real name of Suzana Drobnjaković and that this famous Serbian-American is the daughter-in-law of the legendary Sophia Loren? Those who watched Dawson’s Creek, NCIS, Shameless or the third instalment of cult American blockbuster filmMission: Impossible might be surprised to find that the real name of actress Sasha Alexander, who appears in all these titles, is actually called Suzana Drobnjaković! Born to an Italian father and a Serbian mother, she is extremely proud of her Balkan roots despite having spent her entire life inAmerica (she was born in Los Angeles). We’re currently watching Sasha Alexander in the series Rizzoli & Isles on the FOX Crime channel, and it wasactually this roleof theblunt and pragmatic forensic scientist Maura Isles, whom she has portrayed over seven seasons and more than 105 episodes, that brought her worldwide fame, but alsoaprecious friendshipwithher co-starAngieHarmon. In this exclusive interview for Elevate, the most famous Hollywood star with Serbianorigins reveals the

40 | Intervju » Interview memories that connect her toSerbia and how her journey led her to the heroine that is Maura Isles. “Actually, the enduring “friendship”withMaura left itsmarkonme. It’s impossible to portray someone for so longwithout acquiring at least some of their habits and character traits.Maura and I differ a lot. She is the essence of pure reason and professional coolness. Her logic cuts like a knife and that’swhy she found the perfect counterbalance in Jane Rizzoli, who is completelyspontaneous, chilled and isn’t bothered about any of the ruleswithoutwhichmyMaura’s lifewould be possible. The truth is that I’mmuch closer to Jane than toMaura inmy private life, though I do increasingly “catch” myself wondering: “Hmm, how would Maura solve this problem?”, reveals this actresswhooftenboasts of her knowledge of Serbian, which – alongside Englishand Italian– is the third language that she speaks fluently. And so it was that, in one of the most popular late-night chat shows, the whole of America was able towatch Sasha teaching famous host Conan O’Brien how easy Serbian really is.” You also demonstrated that in the series, right? “Yes, but in a slightly different way than with Conan [laughs]. Our language is very exotic to foreigners. I often speak Serbian, because I think it’s important to nurture the memory of one’s roots. However, with Conan I demonstrated that slightly juicier side of the Serbian language, throughoriginal Serbian swear words of course, which was being recounted formonths afterwards. That’s nonetheless a little subtler in the series. Maura explains, through a conversationwith Jane and their colleagues, howeasy a language Serbian is to learn; she converses with the victims of attackers whose methods are linked to crimes committed against Serbs during World War II. The producers turned my links with Serbia into very interesting material to enrich the series, and I’mglad thatwas so well accepted by the audience.” Your association with Rizzoli & Isles lasted almost a decade. How are your memories of filming for this series? “The reason I loved this show from the start is that it was never a classic thriller, butnor did it have the standard series format thatwewere then accustomed to.The whole story focused on thewonderful friendship between two completely different but equally successful and courageouswomen.Thatwas always what I likedthemost aboutRizzoli& Isles, that naturalness andunobtrusiveness of theirs. They are real superwomen, but not in the sense of fighting criminals.Their strength is reflected in their ability to be alone. They recognised that in one another and that’s what makes this series special. I like the fact that we didn’t impose on them a need to be best friends at all costs; that their conversations aren’t hollow stories about guys and nights out, but rather intelligence andhonest feelings. There aren’tmany shows thathaveallowed relations between the main characters to develop to that level gradually, only to ultimately form a truly strong and emotionally charged relationship. And it seems to me that that’salsopreciselywhy theaudience loved Jane and Maura.” What was your greatest challenge in creating the role of Maura Isles? “Everything [laughs]. Apart from the fact that we’re both women, we have absolutely nothing in common. I’mbadat logic andmaths, we have completely different characters. I’mmore the type of person who surrenders to themoment and likesunpredictabilityandchallenges, while a life without rules would be hell for Maura. But I liked the fact that she instilled some discipline in my life. The biggest challenge forme was definitely her job. I could never have imagined myself at a forensic autopsy table, dissecting people and using all themedical terms that I somehow managed to master in the end, but you never know what life will bring you. And I ended up spending seven seasons doing precisely that. Did you read Tess Gerritsen’s novels that formed the basis of the show prior to standing in front of the cameras? “I didn’t.The script for the show wasmyfirst contactwithTess, andas part of my preparations I then read two of her books for the first time. However, theproducers likedthe fact that I’dhadnoprevious contactwith the content, so they wanted me to base Maura on a vision of my own, andnot to stick somuch to the novels and what fans of Tess Gerritsen would like to see in the show. And it seems to me that it was precisely this new approach that brought some authentic freshness. Interestingly, I like thrillers and mysteries and, apart from Tess, one of my favourite authors, whose works I enjoy, is John Grisham.” Foto: Profimedia / TNT Collection / Everett
