The bookmakers have all sorts of stars in the running to become Daniel Craig’s successor, including the aforementioned runners-up and favourites like Tom Hardy, Regé-Jean Page and Idris Elba. But what do the Bond producers themselves have to say? Barbara Broccoli has opened up about how she will cast the new 007 and admits that her latest star for Bond 26 will need to do more than just look good in a suit. “The thing is, when you cast James Bond, you’re not just casting one movie. You’re making a decision that you’re going to have to live with for at least a decade. Are the next set of 007 movies going to be more humorous or less humorous, more gritty or gentle? And then, when we’ve done that, we have to figure out the actor to play it. So, no, it’s not just ‘Oh, who looks good in a suit,” she said speaking to The Times. In the meantime, let’s see who’s among the favourite actors to replace Craig. Tom Hardy has been a strong frontrunner in the race to become 007, but the latest developments suggest that his chance is slipping through his fingers. Regé-Jean Page currently tops the Bond leader board. This suave and sophisticated Bridgerton hunk has captured the hearts of Bond fans over recent months. Idris Elba is so cool, isn’t he? On that alone, he should be Bond. Then you look at his body of work, from big-budget blockbusters to small-scale crime dramas, and unsurpassed TV show The Wire. It’s Luther, the British series in which Elba play a London detective, that offers the most compelling case for him to become the first African-British actor to play Bond. He said in early 2021 that he’s aware of the rumours, but is satisfied with his lot. “I know the rumours about Bond have always chased me,” he said. “Listen, my poor mum is like ‘One day you’re going to get it!’ I was like, ‘Mum, I’m good, I’ve got Luther!” He stated more recently that he's definitively “not going to be the next James Bond”. End of story? Maybe. Maybe not. Now in the running is award-winner Jamie Dornan, following a spike in his popularity over the last month. This Irish actor recently starred in Kenneth Branagh's Belfast, which is thrilling critics, after previously gaining a name for himself as Christian Grey in the sexy 50 Shades of Grey series. He is narrowly behind Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden in the running, who has also seen his popularity spike of late. Madden recently appeared as Ikaris in the Marvel film Eternals, which boosted his Bond odds. However, he has quite a way to go to rival James Norton. The McMafia actor has already staked his claim for the role by confirming what he would bring to the character: diabetes. “I'm a diabetic. How cool would it be to have a diabetic Bond? It would be wonderful for all those sick kids out there to think even a diabetic could be Bond”. But Norton also has some extremely tough competition. Henry Cavill is neck-and-neck with Norton in the Bond competition. He has made a name for himself playing nerds in The Witcher and Superman. However, the British star confirmed recently that he “does not know” what’s going on behind the scene of the Bond casting. “Time will tell. You don’t know which direction they want to take Bond in and so I like to say that everything’s always on the table.” He is right, as we are far from a decision on who will charm us in the 26th instalment.
