| 5 YEAR OF NEW POSSIBILITIES . GODINA NOVIH MOGUĆNOSTI Iskreno vaša, Er Srbija Yours sincerely, Air Serbia Dragi gosti, Behind us is a true month of celebration. This June, we marked the 92nd anniversary of the extraordinary tradition of our airline. We do not hesitate to state that there are few companies worldwide that can boast of having achieved somany years of service. And even though tradition dictates that we receive birthday presents, we have decided to present gifts to you. There is now an even larger number of cities you can travel to, thanks to which the range of possibilities at your disposal is even greater. We believe this is the best way to thank you. June has been extremely exciting for us at Air Serbia. This has been the month during which we have pushed our limits, taken steps forward and written pages in the new history of Serbian aviation. It all started on the rst day of the month, when we took representatives of the most signi cant media in Serbia to “the land of a thousand lakes”on the inaugural ight to Helsinki. They were accompanied by our business partners, while a surprise guest was the winner of the 2007 Eurovision song contest, Marija Šerifović. With a mini concert on one of the central squares in the capital of Finland, our only Eurovision winner evoked memories of a unique musical feat achieved 12 years ago, precisely in that city. A plane took o bound for Barcelona that same day, and a day later that plane with our ag touched down at the airport in Madrid. The rst four days of June were marked by the introduction of direct ights to Kiev, Krasnodar, Rijeka, Nice and Cairo, ith Zadar later included in our schedule. We were practically writing a series of new stories in each city that was included in our new network of destinations, together with our friends, business partners and representatives of Serbianmedia and the creative industries, thus best tailoring ourselves to the slogan of advertising campaign entitled‘Nine new stories’. However, the biggest expansion in the history of our company does not end here.We aremoving forwardwith the wind in our sails. Constantine the Great Airport in Niš will become the second base for our planes, alongside Belgrade NikolaTesla Airport, as early as this month. We intend tomake a new important regional hub right there at the crossroads fromwhere the roads lead from the center of the Balkans to all four sides of the world. We are connecting Serbia’s former capital with 12 European cities. We are proud to be able to work on the promotion of our beautiful land and to present Niš to tourists and businesspeople. We continue to create new stories andmemories because of you and in cooperation with you. We would like to thank you for being part of our victories. Enjoy ying with us and have a nice trip!

ČASOPISI SU MOJ LETEĆI RITUAL NENADGLADIĆ LEPI BRKA APART FROMYOUR PASSPORT AND MONEY, WHAT DON’T YOU BOARD A PLANEWITHOUT? Something to read is obligatory. A book for longer journeys or some magazine. I gave up the press a few years ago, and reading a magazine is my in- ight ritual. Okay, it’s also nice to have some video game installed on your phone. WHY DO YOU LIKE PLANES? Planes have been my favourite mode of transport since childhood. I experience them as an available variation on teleportation (especially if I fall asleep during the ight). In the morning you’re in one city, country, continent, and a few hours later you’re in completely di erent surroundings, a different culture or climate. What’s better than that, especially if the alternative is 10-12 hours driving? WHICH JOURNEY HAS REMAINED FOREVER ETCHED IN YOUR MEMORIES? My longest journey will remain forever in my memory. That was my return to Belgrade fromNew Zealand via Tahiti, Los Angeles, London and Budapest. It lasted a combined total of over 25 hours. As it was in February, I came from summer in New Zealand and a pleasant 25°C to -7°C, passing through who knows howmany time zones, and doing so backwards. It was interesting, but also quite gruelling. Jet-leg worth remembering. WHY DO YOU LOVE BELGRADE? Belgrade is like family. You can’t choose your family and place of birth, so there’s nothing left for you to do but to act towards Belgrade like family. Sometimes it drives me crazy, sometimes I’m indi erent, but I love it. Why do I love it? Probably because I’ve reached the age when I’ve reconciled myself with all of its faults. Stockholm Museum of Women’s History Despite the fact that women comprise half of theworld’s population, the dominant heritage and historical narratives around theworld are deeply patriarchal –men are themain protagonists of history. That’s why the newly foundedMuseumofWomen’s History in Stockholm focuses on the presence of the fairer sex in history. Themuseumdoes not have its own building, but rather depicts events where they took place – in public spaces. Conceived as a collaboration betweenmuseums, archives and theatres, it seeks to tell stories about women that are unknown tomany. Amsterdam Marry for a day In order to deal with the over 20 million tourists that visit the city annually, Amsterdamhas conceived a brilliant campaign under the title“Marry an Amsterdammer”. During this city tour, tourists rst marry locals, even exchanging rings, and then begin their honeymoon. Accompanied by their new spouses, tourists travel to less commercialised parts of the city and familiarise themselves with Amsterdam from the perspective of local residents. „Dort jol“ na turskom jeziku znači četiri puta i to je raskršće bilo glavni trgovački centar evropske Turske jer je vodilo ka Istanbulu, Vidinu, Beču i Dubrovniku The junction of the streets named after Emperor Dušan and King Peter, which continues into Dubrovnik Street, determined the name of the entire neighbourhood. ‘Dort jol’ means four roads in Turkish, and this crossroads was the main shopping hub of European Turkey, as it led to Istanbul, Vidin, Vienna and Dubrovnik Tekst/Words: Željka Mrđa Fotografije/Photography: Mitar Mitrović Dubr ovač ka

Poznato kao Studentski park, ovo mesto je od 1824. godine bilo prva pijaca u Beogradu (dole) At the plateau in front of the Faculty of Philosophy, public baths were located during the time that the city was inhabited by Romans (up). | 27 In the basement of today’s City Library is located an entrance to Kalemegdan Fortress. What is nowadays referred to as the Roman Hall, and which serves as avenueforexhibitionsandliteraryevenings, preserves the foundations of the ramparts and part of themain gate of the former Roman forti cation. The castrumwas erected at the end of the 2nd century or the beginningof the 3rd, and stationed therewas one of the most competent legions for defence against barbaric attacks, Flavia Felix, while the remnants and ruins were found when thelibrarywasrenovatedinthe1980s. Itwas around thismilitary camp that the Singidunum settlement developed, which the Romans had inherited fromCelts. VIA CORDO We follow the traces of the Belgrade of antiquity in the city’s busiest pedestrian street.Namely,KnezMihailova[PrinceMihailo’s] Street, whichduring the timeof theRomans was known asVia cordo, themain accessroadleadingtoKalemegdanFortress. In that street, inthepassagewaythatconnects KnezMihailovawithVasinaStreet, between modernwindowdisplaysandmetalarchitectural constructions, youcanseearchaeological ndsdatingback to theperiod fromthe 2nd to the 4th centuries, whichwere excavatedalong that precise route. Itemsdisplayed in showcases, Roman jewellery or pottery, testify to howpeople lived at that time, just as thecashmachine locatedopposite these display cases testi es to how we live today andhowwe“mint”money.Thispassageway reminds us that we are only the current users of this city, passing through, like the Romans before us. And that’s why we should be careful what we leave behind! BATHS ONTHE PLATEAU IntheareafromStudents’Squaretothe plateau infrontof theFacultyof Philosophy, publicbathswerelocatedduringthetimethat thecitywas inhabitedbyRomans.Alongside their basic function as public baths, for the Romans these were places for encounters, socialising, business meetings, while some even had their own libraries. Is that sometimes recalled by the students of the faculties of philosophy and philology, who pass throughtheplateauonadailybasis, overladenwith books and lists of literature, and for whom spa is a considered noun? We don’t know, buttheremainsofthesebathscertainly represent a cultural heritage that is used on a daily basis. These are three connected walls, so-calledapses intheshapeofahorseshoe that areproppedupagainst thebuilding of the Rectorate. The baths constructed at the end of the 3rd century were discovered in 1968, and at that time eight chambers were excavated that belong to an establishedtypeof ancient thermalbaths. The largest part of the spawas inStudents’Park, but itwasdecided inthe1970s that itwould beburied, as thebestway toensure itspreservation. All that’s remained is the part with the students, to stand as a living lesson for Belgraders about the archaeology and history of their city. MOSQUE ANDTOMBS Bayrakli Mosque is the only preserved mosque of the 273 that existed in Turkish Belgrade. KING PETER ANDDUSHAN’S ST Dorćol was once all of Belgrade, and the junction of the streets named after Emperor Dušan and King Peter, which continues into Dubrovnik Street, determined the name of theentireneighbourhood.‘Dort jol’means four roads in Turkish, and this crossroads was the main shopping hub of European Turkey, as it ledtoIstanbul,Vidin,ViennaandDubrovnik. The history of this crossroads also shows the terrible times for life inBelgrade, because theTurks displayed the severed heads of all the disobedient there. During the period of Turkish rule in Belgrade, themain street, mainmarket, was Kralja Petra Street, and it was then called Glavna [Main],Trgovačkaulica [Merchants’Street]. It was divided into three parts: themainmarket, Zerek and Dorćol. The main market extended fromtheCathedral Church to the corner of Knez Mihailova and Kralja Petra.
