On Friday evening, 21
st
November, in front of popular
galleries housed in socio-realist buildings in a part of town
that once belonged to East Berlin and is today at the very
heart of the German capital, young, curious people began to
gather. Various languages can be heard, but the dominant
language is that of the former Yugoslavia. These people
have come to mark the beginning of the second Serbinale,
the festival of new Serbian art.
For the second consecutive year, young Serbian artists
are exhibiting their works in Berlin, a world artistic centre,
under the organization of their countrymen who live in the
city. This year’s Serbinale focused on visual art and music,
with twelve Serbian artists of the younger generation being
presented to the Berlin audience. The motto of this year’s
festival is “Road to Europe”.
The Serbinale is a unique festival anywhere in the
world. It was created on the initiative of four young women
living in Germany, who concluded as organizers that the
rich artistic offer of Berlin lacks the systematic present-
ing of contemporary culture from Serbia. The aim of the
Serbinale is to present young, authentic Serbian artists and
to work on connecting them to German artists, culture orga-
nizations and institutions.
The organizers of the Serbinale believe that the ex-
change of art holds the potential for the modernisation of
society and represents the best form of communication be
